Natural Therapies
for PMS
Up to 85% of women are affected by premenstrual syndrome (PMS),
and many women are interested in alternatives to prescription meds.
Calcium (1000 to 1200 mg/day of elemental calcium) can improve
mood, bloating, food cravings, and pain, and may even prevent PMS.
Although it may take a few months to see an improvement in PMS
symptoms, calcium also helps to prevent osteoporosis. Magnesium
(360 mg/day of elemental magnesium) also seems to improve mood
and decrease bloating. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) 100 mg/day may help
with many PMS symptoms, including depression. Higher doses aren't
more effective and can cause peripheral neuropathy. Chasteberry
(Vitex agnus-castus) seems to improve breast tenderness, consti-
pation, and mood, but not bloating. PMS affects women to varying
degrees. A severe form of PMS, called premenstrual dysphoric dis-
order (PMDD), affects about 5% to 10% of women. Symptoms of
| PMDD are similar to those of PMS, but are more severe and signifi-
1 cantly interfere with daily living activities and relationships. Women
I with PMDD should consult a health care professional.
