Onion Growers’
Dilemma.
The spectre of over-production
has stalked through the onion dis-
trict of southwest Texas leaving
poverty and desolation in its wake.
It usually takes a calamity to teach
people important lessons and it
seems that an industry must be
blighted before the necessity for a
. comprehensive marketing system
can be understood.
The onion growers dumped car-
loads of their fancy products on the
markets which did not pay freight
and yet the price of the onion was
not perceptibly decreased to the
consumer. The middleman appear-
ed to spot cars for destruction, re-
fusing to heed the cry of distress
from the producer or the pangs of
hunger of the consumer.
Favor the Amendment.
- Dalles. Tex. June 24.—Two mass
meetings of citizens were held in the
auditorium of the high school in this
city today in favor of the proposed
amendment to the state constitution
authorising the issuance of bonds for
buildings at state institutions. The
first was a large gathering of repre-
seatative womea of the city under
the auspices of the Texas Federation
of Women's Clubs and the Texas
Congress of Mothers. The second
was at eight, promoted by the local
alumni association of the Univerity
of Texas and the friends of the other
educational institutions in the state
which will benefit by the proposed
amendment.

Decline off
County Towns.
Towns in the last census period
gained three inhabitants for every
one that rural districts gained; but
all those living in incorporated
places of less than twenty-five hun-
dred inhabitants are classified by
the census as rural population. The
gain in population, broadly speak-
ing, was confined to towns of more
than twenty-five hundred inhabit-
ants, and a table prepared by the
National Federation of Retail Mer-
chants shows more than six thous-
and country towns, in eight states,
that actually lost population in the
tea years. This table includes one
hundred and fifty-six county seats
Missouri, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan
and Illinois out of a total of four
hundred and ninety county seats in
those states.
This rather extensive stagnation
or decay in country-town popula-
tion in that great agricultural region
approximately bounded by the Mlis-
souri, Ohio and Hudson rivers is de-
scribed by a correspondent as appal-
ling It certainly indicates that the
country town should take of itself.
Several months ago aa investiga-
tion of the same phenomenon within
a relatively restricted area led to a
strong presumption of an intimate
relationship between good roods and
country-town population—t hose
towns that enjoyed the advantage
of improved highways tending to
hold there own. er to gain, sad thorn
under the disadvantage of bed roods
tending to lose. For a country
town that depends upon rural trade
this is the very first point to be
considered.
