Lutheran ministry grant benefits

Ministries has awarded a
$25,000 grant to Lutheran So-
cial Services to buy medical
supplies and equipment and
pay for home modifications
for special needs foster chil-
dren in Central Texas, includ-
ing one special foster home in
Kendall County.
Mike and Ruth Schwartz of
Boerne are just one example
of dedicated LSS foster par-
ents who specialize in caring
for primary medical needs
children. They currently care
for 10 medically fragile chil-
dren at Heartland Ranch.
They have been fostering for
19 years and have cared for
more than 140 children with
shaken baby syndrome, prena-
tal drug exposure, HIV and
AIDS and other diseases and
disabilities. The children are
dependent on feeding tubes,
ventilators and medication for
survival.
"The children inspire us with
their will to live and their abil-
ity to love," said Ruth
Schwartz. "When they come
to the ranch, they are fragile
and untrusting due to past
abuse and neglect; but within
hours, they begin to open their
hearts to us. It's amazing to
see the transformation. All

Texas Composite will hold a blood drive on Thursday, June 23,
from 7:30 to 10 a.m. South Texas Blood & Tissue Center mo-

First United Methodist Church of Boerne will host a blood
drive on Sunday, June 26. The mobile unit will be in the park-

Donors must present photo identification. Anyone 17 years of
age or older who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good gen-
eral health may donate blood. Donors should eat at least four
hours before their donation and drink plenty of fluids such as
water and fruit juice before and after donating. Fasting is not
recommended.

Belton - At the June 4 meeting of the Texas Mo-
torcycle Roadriders Association (TMRA) the
Boerne Convention and Visitor Bureau presented
a bid to host the group’s state rally in 2007.
Meredith Wendele, CVB director, provided the
group with Boerne brochures to accompany the
bid packet.
After some discussion and questions, the group
heard bids from other cities, then voted to hold the
April 2007 rally in Boerne.
The group will use the Kendall County Fair-
grounds primarily for lodging, but some of those
attendings will use local establishments. Approxi-
mately 1,000 people are expected to spend three
days in Boerne, visiting local restaurants, hotels
and retailers.

The Texas Hill Country chap-
ter of the Harley Owners Group
will sponsor a fun-filled motor-
cycle event on Saturday, June
18, to raise funds to send kids to
the MDA summer camp this
year.
The event will be from 10 a.m.
to 6:30 p.m. at Javelina Harley-
Davidson on IH-10
Events include a 60-mile poker
run with cash prizes, bike
games, a bike show for trophies
and a raffle for a brand new
2005 Harley Davidson Sportster
1200C motorcycle.
All bikes and bikers are invited
to the event. The poker run entry
fee is $25, cost of an MDA
sponsored flu shot, and includes
breakfast tacos and a raffle tick-
et for the bike.
There will be food, beverage
and vendors booths at the event,
with music provided by Ayala
all day long. Javelina Harley-
Davidson is on IH-10 West, exit
Fair Oaks Parkway. Hundreds of
motorcycles will be on display.
There is no admission fee to
the event. Bike raffle tickets are
$10. In addition tot he Grand
prize motorcycle, there will be

from $100 to $1,00 Harley-
Davidson gift certificates.
