Good day

Tapatio Springs residents tired of wait-
ing for long-promised repairs to Johns
Road demanded action from Kendall
County commissioners Monday.
More than 20 residents filled the court-
room during the Commissioners Court
meeting to seek improvements to a road
they say is too dangerous to ignore.

Kountry Kurl floats have reputation for creativity
BY JESSICA Sanders
Staff Writer
Saturday morning was
already heating up as Comfort
resident Garry Schwab hung
up a hog for butchering. He
sharpened his knives as the ill-
fated pig dangled before its
papier-mache brethren.
“Look, it’s a cow!” shouted a
little boy along the Center
Point parade route.
“No, it’s hog!” another boy
ran from his chair to get a bet-
ter look.
Schwab, a 25-year parade
veteran, just lowered his
butchering tools, smiled and
waved.
“That kind of reaction is what
we really want,” he said. “It
helps people relate to the old
days.”
Schwab and his wife, Janis,
started creating floats for the
Comfort Independence Day
parade when Janis Schwab
purchased the Kountry Kurl
Salon. Janis Schwab’s father,
Otto Rust, was a director of the
Kendall County Fair
Association and encouraged
them to enter in the fair parade,
too.
“We just started because it
was a fun way to advertise,”
she said. “It just kinda bal-
looned - sometimes Garry
doesn’t sleep at night because
he’s so excited about the
parade.”

Two Kendall County
* landowners are hoping that per-
sistence will pay off after resub-
mitting their petition for annex-
ation to Boerne City Council.
In March, Elgin and Jason
Schwarz were denied annexa-
tion of their 124-acre lot on
Highway 46 East. The land is
expected to become a low-den-
sity housing development.
The first of two public hearing
will be held during Tuesday’s
meeting; the second is sched-
uled for July 26. The hearings
will be followed by two sepa-
. rate readings of the petition
which must must get council
approval on both occasions
before it becomes official.
The Schwarzs’ petition was
rejected after the second hear-
ing because councilmen were
concerned that the city’s sewer
facilities would not be able to
sustain the possible develop-
ment. Since that time, City
Planner Chris Turk said, the
Schwarzs changed the develop-
ment plan to use septic systems
instead of city sewer systems.
He said the lots are expected to
be about an acre in size, accom-
modating about 80 homes.
Some citizens and the Boerne
Together group, however, were
also pressuring the Council to
reject the Schwarzs’ petition.
Boerne Together spokesman
Mark Mason said the group will
continue to protest any potential
residential annexation until the
city’s master plan is complete.
