Bush’s credibility
gap is widening
Like a person’s reputation,
credibility is hard to win but
easy to lose. President Bush’s
approval rating has fallen dras-
tically in the past few months -
now hovering around 40 per-
cent. There is some indication
that his low standing now is, at
least partially, because he has
lost some of his credibility with
the American people.
When the President declared
that we were invading Iraq
because of the threat posed to
the United States he was wrong.
But he was so skillful in tying
Iraq to 9/11 in the minds of the
American people that his mis-
statements were overlooked.
People figured that if Iraq was
involved in 9/11 they had it
coming anyway.
But the American people do
not seem to have been so chari-
table lately.
He lost a lot of credibility in
the aftermath of Katrina. He

Communism is not dead
In August 1991, the world was told that Communism was “offi-
cially dead.” No one was really sure exactly why, since throughout
history such a great and powerful evil had virtually never come to an
end so dramatically. But we in the West were told that the collapse
of Communism was a trump of good over evil of the Reagan
Doctrine, of democracy over tyranny, of Western capitalism over
socialism.
It seems that almost no one asked the question, “but what about the
