High oil usage means
the rest of the world
can oppose us freely
The oil-producing countries
are making a ton of money from
the high prices we pay at the
pump for gas. So much money is
being made that our world is
being remade as we watch.
The oil rich countries are now
wielding tremendous new lever-
age in world affairs. As money
flows from our pockets into
theirs, the United States is find-
ing that our military power is
increasingly being countered by
the new economic strength in
these nations.
The United States uses more
than 20 million barrels (14 per-
cent of world production) of oil
a day. More than half of which
has to be imported.
Venezuela’s oil revenue this
year will be more than $35 bil-
lion, Iran will take in over $40
billion, Russia $110 billion. This

Perry pledges $10 million for border security
AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry
on Oct. 12 proposed a security
plan for the Texas-Mexico bor-
der region, saying, “In this post
9-11 era, there is no such thing
as homeland security without
border security.”
Texas shares 1,200 miles of
border with Mexico. Perry’s
$10 million plan would beef up
the presence of law enforce-
ment and improve communica-
tions among various law
enforcement entities in the
region.
“I offer this plan, not because
it is the state’s responsibility to
control the federal border, but
because the state of Texas can-
not wait for the federal govern-
ment to implement needed bor-
der security measures,” he said.
Perry praised the federal gov-
ernment for providing 1,000
new border patrol agents and
for investing in surveillance at
crossings, but said Congress
must do more.

Why are some postal
workers so very careless?
What is the deal with our mail clearly marked “DO NOT BEND”
still being bent anyway. Do our postal workers really read those
marks? I don’t think so. Several times we have received our special
photos and certificates ruined by a postal worker.
When I called I got the same recording each time, so I would go
by hoping to speak to the Postmaster. Much to my dismay the per-
son in charge was never available.
I then called the main USPS line 1-800-275-8777 (ASK-USPS) to
find help there. It wasn’t much use. I was told there would be some-
one in contact with me about this matter, as well as the post office.
Nothing ever came about. Yes, I called back, and I have been “prom-
ised” action. When it happens, then I’ll believe it.
Good luck to everyone else, I hope your mail won’t be bent, espe-
cially when clearly marked not to.

Home-Away-From-Home
Most of us have read of the wonderful hospitality extended by the
families and businesses of Boerne and Kendall Co. to the hurricane
evacuees from the Texas Gulf Coast. It is expected that some of our
neighbors will be with us for awhile.
The Hill Country Animal League (HCAL) became the Home-
Away-From-Home to over 40 dogs and cats. These pets were board-
ed for the Rita evacuees who were unable to keep them at their tem-
porary lodgings here in Boerne. We also provided a nesting place for
two love-birds, a few parakeets and a ferret.
The days after Hurricane Rita were pretty hectic here at the HCAL
as owners came to care for and play with their pets, giving them
much needed TLC during this stressful time. It was also a time for
the owners to come together and share stories of their hasty retreat
from the devastation of Rita. Hopefully, some semblance of peace
was found in the graciousness of our community.
We still have a few boarders but we are.back-to business-as-usual,
encouraging responsible pet owners in Kendall County to have their
animals spayed or neutered.
It is so important that we all help prevent unwanted litters of pup-
pies and kittens.
Our new facility at 924 N. Main will soon have an on-site spay-
neuter vetennary clinic. In the meantime, if you, or someone you
know is unable to afford having an animal “fixed” call 249-2341 and
we will make low or no-cost arrangements.
In closing, I would like to say that we at HCAL are blessed to have
been able to provide a safe haven for the cherished pets of our dis-
placed neighbors. All the credit goes to the wonderful residents of
Kendall County whose generous contributions provided for the pur-
chase of urgently needed supplies. Your blessings were like “Manna
from Heaven!”
