Tech Dynamic Message Board, one of two message boards the County acquired from
the Homeland Security Agency. This sign, which is mounted to a trailer, holds up to 99
pre-selected messages and can be programmed to display customized messages. The
second sign, an Instalert Message Board, can be mounted on a vehicle and holds up to
25 preset messages. It can also display customized messages through a personal data
assistant. Messages could be displayed to warn drivers of road hazards, advise
motorists about accidents ahead or direct evacuees to designated shelters. The total

electronically, making it a much
safer program for personnel fir-
ing the fireworks.
The day of the event, approxi-
mately 25 firefighters meet at 8
a.m. to begin organizing and set-
ting up the show. The tubes have
to be properly set, cleaned and
anchored together, with the larger
tubes having to be buried for
safety purposes.
Then the process of loading
each shell begins. There are
approximately 800 tubes which
need to be loaded, and each shell
will have a “squib” or electronic
igniter installed.
This igniter has to be wired
into the electronic control
board, a process that takes
between five and six hours to
complete, sometimes longer
depending on the number of
volunteers available.
After the set up is complete,
firefighters go home, change
clothes and return to begin
accepting donations which help
fund the department’s financial
responsibility for the event.
The show lasts 20 to 25 min-
utes, and then clean up begins.
The tubes that contained the fire-
works are allowed to cool and are
then checked for any unfired
shells. The tubes are disassem-
bled and loaded back onto trailers
and trucks. This process is usual-
ly completed by 11 p.m.
