plant (now employing about 1700)
can maintain its position as a
leading Central Texas indus-
trial employer and citizen, an-
nounced Works Manager H. F.
Chrisco.
“After 19 years of near-
constant expansion and modern-
ization to remain competitive
in U. S. and world aluminum
markets, Alcoa’s Rockdale
Works is today wrestling with
an abnormally high inventory
problem, production costs that
have gone up about 10% since
1969, selling prices that are
down some 20%, and costly
environmental regulations,"
according to the Works Mana-
ger.
Chrisco, who is manager of
the country’s largest primary
aluminum smelting plant, cited
a recent statement made to free
world producers by Alcoa Pre-
sident W. H. Krome George.
Pointing to overcapacity, he
characterized the now-ailing
aluminum industry by saying
that: “None of us (producers)
is feeling very well; some of
us are pretty sick, and a few
of us may not survive."
“Alcoa, and its Rockdale
Works are certainly going to
survive because they are both
basically healthy adults — but
Just not feeling very well at the
moment," Chrisco said.
To help combat worldwide
overcapacity, Alcoa has trim-
med production at six of the
eight company smelters — in-
cluding the shutting down ofone
potline at Rockdale last July.
The potline selected for shut-
down at Rockdale was the plant’s
highest cost production unit,
the Works Manager stated.
“The resultant layoff," he
said, “certainly hashadanega-
tive effect in the surrounding
community, even though all of
the 100 Alcoans laid off have
had the opportunity to return
to work since July."
“There are signs that some
major aluminum markets may
begin to pick up; however, we
have no forecasts that the re-
mainder of 1971 or the first
quarter of 1972 will be any
better than the past six
months," according to the plant
manager.
“At this time, however, we
have no plans for further cut-
backs in production at this plant.
“But, Chrisco quickly added,
“If Rockdale Works costs con-
tinue to climb, our customers
may see to it that our produc-
tion is reduced."
Recently, Alcoa’s Smelting
Division General Manager S. A.
Jones (himself a former Rock-
dale Alcoan) stated that the
company’s now-reduced pro-
duction level is correct and
that substantial primary metal
inventories will be built up at
almost all Alcoa smelters over
the next two-year period.
“While building these inven-
tories, it is extremely impor-
tant that all metal going into
storage go in at the fewest
possible cost per pound. Not
only is low cost production per
pound important in inventory,
it is also a significant factor
in Alcoa’s decision-making on
additional potlines to be re-
moved from production, if and
when required," Jones said.
“Future Job security for Al-
coans and the continuation of
the plant-community partner-
ship depends on how well Rock-
dale Alcoans hold the line on
costs and improve efficiency
and productivity," the Rock-
dale Works Manager said.
“With an understanding and
cooperative attitude on the part
of all Alcoans, community
friends, and the plant’s many
service and supply companies
all over Central Texas, I am
convinced that our efforts to
make Rockdale Works a more
secure place to work and with
which to do business can be
successful," Works Manager
Chrisco concluded.
