UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST W. H. LINDEMANN, OF BRENHAM, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE-LACINGS.
Speeification'forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,449, dated June 6, 1876; application filed
April 29, 1876.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGusT W. H. LIN-
DEMANN, of Brenham, in the county of Wash-
ington and State of Texas, have invented a
new and valablelImprovement in Shoe-Laces;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a
fall, clear, and exact description of the construc-
tion and operation of the same, reference be-
ing had to the annexed drawings, making a
part of this specification, and to the letters
and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation
of a front elevation of my shoe-lace when
drawn tight; and Fig. ' is a front elevation,
showing the lace open.
This invention has relation to device for
lacing gaiter-boots; and the nature of my in-
vention consists in an arrangement of shoe-
laces whereby the shoe may be properly laced
and the operation performed much more speed-
ily than hitherto.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the
ankle portion of the shoe, and B the meeting
edges thereof, which are to be laced, whether
situated on the side or upper portion of the
foot. These meeting edges are provided with
eyelet-holes C, for the purpose of receiving
the laces d. These laces d are made of any
desired length, and joined at the ends, after
having been passed through the eyelet-holes
C, and are so constructed that when the lac-
ing portion of the shoe is open it will allow
free access to the foot to pass within the shoe.
Between the eyelets are placed hooks or but-
tons (as may be desired) E, over which the
slack portions of the laces are passed, so thatthe opening in the shoe is drawn together,
and the operation of lacing is complete.
There are tassels or tags F attached to the
laces at the points where they are designed
to pass over the hooks or buttons E, by which
they are easily placed over or detached from
the said hooks or buttons, as occasion may
require.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
After the gaiter or shoe has been adjusted
on the foot, the portions of the lace between
the eyelets on the left side of the opening are
drawn over and placed on the hooks or but-
tons situated on the right side of the opening,
and the portions between the eyelets on the
right side are in like manner adjusted on the
hooks or buttons on the left side of the
opening, and by means of this operation the
opening is closed and securely fastened.
When it is desired to loosen the laces, the
operation can easily be performed by the use
of the tassels or tags attached to them.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure
by Letters Patent, is-
An endless lace, d, applied to the meeting
edges of a shoe, as described, in combination
with eyelets C and hook or button fastenings
E, arranged between the eyelets, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have
hereunto subscribed my name in the presence
of two witnesses.
AUGUST W. H. LINDEMANN.
