What does the hospital emer-
gency room usually bring to
mind? If you are like most people,
you probably think of screaming
sirens, screeching brakes and
ambulances rushing to the emer-
gency room entrance with a
seriously ill or injured person
Although this typical image is in
keeping with the intended use of
hospital emergency service, the
actual use of such facilities is far
different and is indicating an
alarming trend

Health Insurance Institute, it was
reported that in some areas of the
country emergency room use has
increased more than 55 percent in
the past 20 years Based on that
figure, estimates have been made
that within the next few years
emergency room visits will exceed
in-patient visits in our hospitals
The alarming significance of these
figures comes to life if one
considers the 42 percent of the
visits to emergency room facilities
are for non-emergency condidi-
tions.
This increase and improper use
of emergency facilities affects
you, the potential patient, in two
separate ways. First the increased
utilization of the emergency
facilities just might endanger your
life, if an actual emergency must
