Photography is a hobby that has paid off for Joel Thronburg
and his father.
Joel has been rewarded with prizes and his father, Bo, earns his
living from it.
Joel, a sixth-grade student at Griffin Middle School, won first
place in the intermediate division of Lewisville Independent
School District’s regional cultural arts contest.
He also was informed recently that he won first place in district
cultural arts competition, which included entries from several
other schools in the Metroplex.
Joel’s prize-winning entry now will be submitted in state com-
petition. If it wins first place at state, the entry will then go to na-
tional competition.
The theme of this year’s cultural arts contest, which is spon-
sored by the national Parent Teacher Association, is “A Past to
Remember, A Future to Mold.”
Students were allowed to enter photo, collage, drawing, print-
making and textile contests as well as writing and music contests.
Entrants were grouped in three age categories. Joel won in the
intermediate division, which included entries from fourth-

Joel’s entry consisted of two black-and-white photographs, one
of his grandfather leaning against an old shed and one of his
younger brother sitting at a desk. Both subjects appear to be
daydreaming.
“I had them looking off as if they were remembering or
wishing,” Joel said.
Joel said he learned about photography through his father, who
is a freelance photographer and who specializes in commercial
photography.
Joel said his father allows him to use his camera equipment and
occassionaly helps him process and print his photos.
Helping develop the photographs is all the assistance Thron-
burg said he offers to his son.
“Joel takes all of his own photos,” Thronburg said. “He has a
natural talent and sees photos that others don’t.”
Joel’s entry in this year’s cultural arts contest was his first prize
winner, Joel said. He entered the contest two years ago, but did
not win, he said:
Despite his obvious talent, Joel said photography is only a hob-
by for him.
But after winning two first place prizes, Joel said he plans to
enter a lot more contests in the future.
