teries,” said Lt. Henry Dayton, pub-
lic education officer for the Arlington
County Fire Department. “This is a
much bigger problem.”
Dayton said smoke alarm owners
should push the test button of their
alarms once a week and warned
against pulling batteries in the
alarms for other household and fami-
ly needs, such as a child’s toy.
Using a birthday or holiday to re-
member to replace smoke alarm bat-
teries is also a good idea.
“What I always tell people is when
it gets to be Christmas time think
about your smoke alarms,” said
Chief Philip Charles of the Cherry-
dale Volunteer Fire Department of
Arlington, Va. "There's a tree in the
house ... there’s more paper and
junk.”
The average price for a smoke
alarm ranges from $10 to $20, and
many home improvement and hard-
ware stores regularly offer them at
sale prices. Manufacturers also offer
rebates.
Smoke alarms are lightweight and
easy to install — only a screwdriver
is needed in most cases — and run
on 9 volt batteries.
“Smoke alarms are easier to take
care of and lot less expensive than
they ever have been,” Charles said.
Proper placement of smoke
alarms also is very important.
“We recommend at least one near
the sleeping areas whether they’re
on the first floor or second floor or
whatever,” Dayton said. "That’s the
important thing. They have to be
near the sleeping areas. That’s
where they do the most good.
“You can’t smell smoke when
you’re asleep,” he warned.
At least one smoke alarm should
be placed on other floors of a home,
including the basement. But the
alarms should not be kept too close
to cooking and bathing areas, as
smoke and steam easily set them off.
Smoke alarms placed in garages
can also be set off by auto exhaust
fumes.
Dayton, who encourages
homeowners with questions about
smoke alarms to call or visit their
local fire stations, said there are two
basic styles of smoke alarms avail-
able, the ionization chamber and the
photoelectric cell.
“The ionization chamber takes a
sample of air and determines
whether molecules in the air have
changed.” Dayton said. “That tells
whether there is smoke in the air.”
In the photoelectric type, smoke
cuts through a beam of light and sets
off the alarm.
And smoke alarms do work.
“I've been on fire calls where the
smoke alarm is shriveled up and
burned on the floor because the ceil-
ing fell in — and it’s still going off,”
Dayton said. “They do work.”
