All I wanted to do was sit on the sofas ...
HOME COOKIN'
I just got back from a rather
unexpectedly unpleasant experi-
ence. Flipping through the random
junk mail that fills my mailbox on
a daily basis, a couple of furniture
advertisements caught my eye.
Looking at the really good deals
that the big furniture stores were
having, 1 woefully looked around and from the sofa. It survived two

who approached me as soon
as I walked in the front doors
informed me that it was “over
50,000 square feet,” to which he
must’ve expected me to say, “Oh,
then please show lil‘ ol’ helpless
me around!”
When I didn’t, he proceeded to
pester me about what I was look-
ing for and to follow me all over
the place. Trying to shake him
because I really wanted to look
around on my own, I said, “I think
I want a red sofa, so that should
be easy to spot... thanks!” But he
didn’t leave. He showed me the
three red sofas, and started talking
financing before I even got to sit
on the second one.
Trying to shake the pushy
salesman, I spotted a chocolate
brown sofa that I really liked, and
walked over to it. I ran my hand
over the soft, suede-like micro-
fiber (I think that’s what it was)
just enjoying the feel, when he
interrupted my thoughts with the
financing details and benefits of
buying the “entire living room”
rather than “just” the sofa.
I don’t need coffee tables
and end tables nor do I need
the generic accessories that come
with the sofa, but I wasn’t to the
point of frustration of telling him
that. I wonder if he would have
left me alone to browse if I had?
“I have longhaired cats so I
can’t get anything in this fabric -
it’s a fur magnet,” I said. I know
how the cat hair works. I deal with
it daily.
“Well, actually, this fabric is
specially treated with a formula
that repels cat hair and it can’t
stick to the fabric. And I can get
you no payments until 2014 on it.
What do you think?”
Really? A special formula that
repels cat hair so that it can’t stick
to the fabric? Was he serious?
That was almost the last straw. I
bit my tongue because I knew that
he was just trying to do his job.
“How long is that 2014-deal
going to last?” I asked.
back early. Or if you decide to pay
cash, they can maybe give you a
discount on that... but financing is
the smarter thing to do,” he said.
At this point, I was done.
While I found several sofas I
would have loved to sit on and
stretch out and ponder a possible
purchase, there was no way I was
doing business with that man. To
think that he could stand there
and lie to my face to try to make a
sale completely ruined any future
shopping I might’ve considered
doing there. It was time to send
him on his way.
“Look. This is the first time
I’ve stepped foot in a furniture
store in years. I am not even sure
that I want to buy a new sofa
now. All I wanted to do was look
have a great day!” and I turned
and walked off, hoping to find
the girls since they’d grown bored
listening to him drone on and on
about financing and were looking
at other stuff.
Magic cat hair repellents, my
foot. And I know for a fact that
financing is never better than pay-
ing cash. Sadly, it looks like my
shabby old sofa is going to have
to work until I can find a pressure-
free furniture store. Maybe I can
buy a new one online? I wonder
if online furniture sales include
magic cat hair repellent treat-
ments? Ugh.

“Well, today is the last day, around and sit on the sofas. I just
so when you find something you wanted to sit on them. So thanks,
like, we need to go ahead and get
you worked into the system,” he
said.
“Really? Today is the last day?
That’s too bad. I don’t know which
sofa I like. I hate to feel pressured
to pick the wrong one,” I said.
“Well, I can probably get them
to honor it tomorrow if you come

Dear Dan,
First, bleed your hydraulic system by cracking the alien-head
breather plug on top of your hydraulic pump. If that doesn’t
help, pull the seat and lift cover off and check to see if the oil
screen is covered with debris. If it’s not either of those, then
you probably have a bad hydraulic pump which needs to be
overhauled or replaced. Let me know how it goes.
Sincerely,
Russell
