High school home decor team wins high-stakes competition
— By Elena Tucker
• Staff Writer
Three Champion High School students
who participated in a spring design chal-
lenge are all set to see their bed and
bath plans come to life in a San Antonio
fall Parade of Homes. Garrett Roden-
beck, Jordan Jimenez and Lizzie Merrill
worked as a team, competing against three
other groups in the high school’s interior
design class. Their resulting concepts not
only earned them A’s in teacher Lynnese
Graves’ grade book, but the teens also won
the chance to see their room displayed in

appeal to everyone.”
Merrill and Jimenez both agree that hav-
ing the only guy in the class as a member
of their team helped them to maintain this
kind of design balance.
Richmond is of the same opinion. “Hav-
ing Garrett on their team obviously helped
to keep it gender-neutral although Mrs.
Graves made sure that everybody turned
in something phenomenal,” he said. “All
of the designs were done extremely well. It
was a hard choice. But the winning design
- the way their colors went together, then-
layout and their tile design - was fantastic
and innovative. Some of the stuff they
came up with we’ve never done before.”
Graves, a 10-year teaching veteran said
Preparatory to the project’s finale, the
students were given the blueprints to their
rooms, sessions with designer Resnick,
hours of time during which to prepare, and
a practically unlimited budget since this
was no exercise in low-end design.
“Our price point on that house is at $1.2
million right now,” Richmond said. “It’s

really going to be impressive.”
The contest’s award was substantial
enough, Graves said, that she was “really
nervous” when her teams made their pre-
sentations in front of classmates, company
owner Darren Stadler, Richmond, and
Resnick. But nervous or not, according to
the teacher the outcome was representative
of “real life. Sometimes you invest all of
that time in something,” Graves said, “and
you still don’t get the job.”
Of the three winning students, Jimenez
is the only one who still plans to move
forward in the field of home decor. Mer-
rill, who’d originally thought she wanted
to study interior design, has, even in light
of her team’s success, decided it’s not for
her. Rodenbeck says the project was well-
suited to his future degree in advertising
design. All agree that they had fun.
And despite the high stakes and profes-
sional nature of the challenge, high school
students will be - well - high school stu-

admitted, was being the only guy in a
roomful of girls. Jimenez and Merrill, for
their parts, were happy to have nabbed him

Boerne Project Graduation
2010 planning underway
Project Graduation is an all-night,
drug-free, alcohol-free party for
high school seniors the night of their
graduation day. This year’s Project
Graduation party will be Saturday,
June 5, and will include the gradu-
ating classes of both Boerne and
Boerne-Samuel V. Champion High
Schools.
The party is put together by par-
ents and community members
to help ensure the safety of the
graduates who will become future
leaders. Because of the magnitude
of this party, help is needed finan-
cially and from volunteers to serve
as chaperones, committee members,
chairmen and general volunteer
workers.
The first meeting will be Mon-
day, Aug. 31, at 6:30 p.m. in the
Champion High School Cafeteria.
For more information, e-mail Terry
Foreman at tforeman60@yahoo,
com or call 830-816-8751; or email
Mary Beth Cuevas at mary-beth.

“Parents of graduating seniors, we
need you to help make this party a
huge success! Come to our meeting
and see what you can do to make
this a memory your son or daughter
will never forget!” said Cuevas.

When all else fails - pray for rain at community event
As schools open for the new
year and rain remains a distant
memory, the Boerne Ministerial
Alliance is inviting the commu-
nity to join in prayer for both.
On Sunday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. in
Boerne’s Main Plaza, several pas-
tors from local churches will lead
prayers for both schools and rain.
First Baptist Church Pastor
Mike Harkrider is chairman of
the Ministerial Alliance, which is
sponsoring the event.
“In talking with the other pas-
tors and community leaders as
well, we desperately need rain,
for one thing,” Harkrider said. “As
Christians, we believe that God is
the provider of all things, so we’re
turning to him and asking him for
this great commodity, for our lives
to be sustained. We know that
He’s the one that gives it to us,
so we’re asking Him to provide
it for us.”
As well, Harkrider said, the
prayer event, which will include
civic, educational and leaders “of
all denominations,” will empha-
size the new school year.
“We need to pray for our chil-
dren, for their guidance and
protection, and also with the two
high schools, now, to pray for
unity and to pray for us to be
neighbors, and for us to all be a
true community,” Harkrider said.
For more information about the
community prayer event, call First
Baptist Church 830-249-2527.
