UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE
JOHN L. DELANY, OF HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEET-METAL CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,635, dated December 3, 1872.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. DELANY, of
Huntsville, in the county of Walker and in the
State of Texas, have invented certain new and
useful Improvements in Cans; and do hereby
declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had
to the accompanying drawing and to the let-
ters of reference marked thereon making a
part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the
construction and arrangement of a spout at-
tachment for cans, as will be hereinafter more
fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art
to which my invention appertains to make
and use the same, I will now proceed to de-
scribe its construction and operation,referring
to the annexed drawing, in which-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of
a can with my spout attachment on the same;
and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detached views of
separate parts of my spout attachment.
A represents a can used to contain oil or
any other liquid, and is provided with a nozzle,
B, having screw-threads on its outer side. This
nozzle in the usual cans is open entirely at the
top, but in my case this nozzle is provided
with a top plate, a, having a central aperture
of the same size as the lower end of the spout.
Over the nozzle B is placed a screw-cap, C,
the top 'of which has a central hole for the
passage of the spout D, and this spout isaround its lower end provided with a flange,
b. The spout D is passed through the hole in
the cap C, and two washers, d d, of leather or
other suitable material, are inserted in the cap,
one above and one below the flange b, so that
when the cap is screwed down on the nozzle
the joint will be perfectly tight and no leakage
occur. By making the spout loose in this man-
ner it may be turned to either side, as desired.
The nozzle may be entirely closed in various
ways, either by using the ordinary screw-cap
without a hole, or by inserting a solid washer
in the cap C, which would close the opening
in the nozzle.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by
Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the screw - cap C,
spout D with flange b, and washers d d, all sub-
stantially as and for the purposes herein set
forth.
2. The combination of a can, A, with nozzle
B having top plate a having central aperture,
the screw-cap C, spout D with flange b, and
washers d d, all substantially as and for the
purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I
have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of
June, A. D. 1872.
