UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. MILLEGAN, OF MoKINNEY, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,929, dated March 18, 1873.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. MILLE-
GAN, of McKinney, in the county of Collin
and State of Texas, have invented a new and
useful Improvement in Washing-Machine, of
which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a detail vertical longitudinal
section of myimproved machinetaken through
the line x x of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of
the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the un-
der side of the rubber-block.
My invention has for its object to furnish an
improved washing-machine which shall be
simple in construction, convenient in use, and
effective in operation, washing the clothes
quickly and thoroughly, and without injuring
them. The invention consists in the rubber-
block, formed by the combination of the roll-
ers and bucket with the block, and in the
combination of the connecting - rods, equal-
armed levers, and pivoted operating-lever with
the rubber, the inclined wash-board, and the
box, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a rectangular box, of suitable
length, depth, and breadth. The bottom a'
for about two-thirds, more or less, of the length
of the box A is made inclined, and has a cor-
rugated rubber or wash-board formed upon or
attached to it. To the upper part of the sides
of the box A, over, or nearly over, the lower
end of the inclined wash-board a', is attached
a cross-bar, B, to the middle part of which is
pivoted the end of a lever, C. To the oppo-
site sides of the lever C, at a little distance
from its free end, are pivoted two equal-armed
levers, D. To the ends of the levers D are
pivoted the upper ends of the rods E. The
lower ends of the four rods E are pivoted to
the upper side of the rubber-block F, near its
four corners. To cleats attached to the side
edges of the rubber-block F are pivoted the
ends of four, more or less, fluted rollers, G,
which are arranged one near the lower edge
of said block F, and the others toward theupper part, a space being left between the
lower roller and the one next to it, in which
is secured a bucket, H, as shown in Fig. 3.
In using the machine the lever C is raised
to bring the rubber-block F G H to the up-
per part of the wash-board a'; a part of the
clothes which have been previously soaped
and placed in the water in the box A is drawn
up and spread over the lower part of the wash-
board a'. The lever C is then moved up and
down, which moves the.rubber F G H up and
down upon the wash-board a', until the said
portion of the clothes is washed clean, the
bucket H, each time the lever is raised, bring-
ing up water from the lower part of the box
A to wet the clothes while being operated up-
on. When the portion being operated upon is
sufficiently rubbed it is allowed to drop back
into the box, and another portion is spread
upon the wash-board a', and so on until all
the clothes have been washed; the clothes are
then wrung out, and the dirty water is drawn
off and replaced with clean water; the clothes
are then put back and operated upon again in
the same manner, after which they may be
wrung out again and hung up to dry.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim
as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-
ent-
1. The rubber-block formed by the com-
bination of the rollers G and bucket H with
the block F, substantially as herein shown
and described, to adapt it to operate in com-
bination with the inclined wash-board a', as
and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the rods E, equal-
armed levers D, and pivoted lever C with the
rubber F G H, inclined wash-board a', and
box A, substantially as herein shown and de-
scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM E. MILLEGAN.
