Prescription For The Happy Life—Refilled (Cont'd)
TUESDAY, APRIL 11, 2000—THE BRADY HERALD, BRADY, TEXAS—PAGE 3
those stories...did you laugh when
we came to your religion? Are we
losing our sense of humor? Was Will
Rogers right? He said, "God blessed
America with a sense of humor, but
we like to laugh at other people." Are
we getting so sensitive in this coun-
try that we can laugh only at other
people, not at ourselves?
In Prescriptionfor the Happy Life
#1 I said a man came into my office
and I asked him, "Whom have you
been to see?" He replied, "I went to
see a druggist" I asked, "What idi-
otic advice did he give you?" He said,
"He sent me to you."
See, you like to laugh at me. For
your good health, you have to be able
to laugh at you. I made this talk and a
young man wrote me, "I agree with
you in a certain way, Dr. Jarvis, and
I enjoyed your talk, it was humorous,
but I can't agree with your philoso-
phy about laughing at yourself, that
being one of the prime movers of
problems in this country and others.
How in the world could we tell the
starving children of Bangledesh that
they ought to laugh at themselves?
Is there anyone in here so moronic
that they think that I would espouse
that sort of philosophy!?! I started to
write that young man back, but it take
a book. I'd have to write him a book
about the use of humor. But Friends,
I mean it—if you cannot laugh at
yourselves, you arc headed for the
psychiatrist's couch. They don't need
your money, they've got enough
kooks...to work on. They've got
enough neurotics and hypochondri-
acs who refuse to blame themselves
for their problems.
But if you can laugh at yours, and
realize that part of your problems
may be your fault, you've really have
life on your side. I started to write
that young man a letter anyway and
say, "I think you ought to know that
some idiot has evidently stolen some
of your stationery and is writing asi-
nine letters on it and signing your
name and I think you ought to know
that."
Well, I want you to be enthusias-
tic. About teaching. Be enthusiastic
in front of the kids. I don't mean to

you ever thought about to whom he is
speaking...or rather, ranting? He is
talking to people who are not golfing
and fishing. Yet, it seems they've all
gotthat sermon. He's talking to people
who arc not doing anything wrong.
Maxine has to hold me on the pew. I
want to get up and I want to say,

sinners, why don't you go to hell out
