Letter to the Editor
Christians called
Sirs:
I live in Las Vegas and subscribe
to your newspaper. In your March 15
issue, you chose to include in your
paper and insert announcing the open-
ing of a new Mormon Temple in
Lubbock. Being a Christian, I won-
dered why the Brady Standard Her-
ald would advertise for the Mormon
church.
I'm sure the number one reason is
the money the paper made by doing
this. But I think that the town of
Brady, with it's hundreds, if not thou-
sands of Christians, deserves to know
the truth about Mormonism.
Mormonism was started by Jo-
seph Smith in Palmyra New York
back in the 1830s. When he was 15,
he allegedly receives his First Vision
in which God the Father and Jesus
appear telling Smith that all "Chris-
tian" churches and creeds are apos-
tate (corrupt). Then a few years later,
the angel Moroni allegedly appears
to Smith and tells him of the "golden
plates" containing the book of Mor-
mon.
Guided by Moroni, Smith alleg-
edly unearths the golden plates of the
Book of Mormon on the Hill Cumorah
in Manchester New York in 1827. In
1830, the Book of Mormon is first
published in Palmyra New York, and
what would become the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is
established.
In 1836, the first Mormon temple
is built in Kirkland Ohio. In 1840, the
Mormons found the city of Nauvoo,
Illinois. In 1844, Joseph Smith is
killed in a gun battle in Carthage
Illinois. In 1847, the Mormons, led
by Brigham Young, begin settling
Salt Lake City Utah. In 1893, the Salt
Lake Temple is finished and dedi-
cated.
The Mormon view of Revelation
is their sacred texts, the Bible, (The
Joseph Smith translation), The Book
Of Mormon and two other books
called Doctrines and Covenants, and
the Pearl of Great Price.
Now we should examine some
problem areas pertaining to the valid-
ity of the Mormon Scriptures. First,
the "golden plates" which allegedly
contained the original Book of Mor-
mon, were only seen by Joseph Smith
Way Back When
by Tootsie Mitchell
and a few of his close associates.
Later, those associates recanted their
story about seeing the plates, and
years later, all of these associates
abandoned their faith in Mormon-
ism. When Joseph Smith was asked
about the whereabouts of the plates,
he said that they were taken back to
Heaven by Moroni.
Second, the book of Mormon says
that Jesus was born in Jerusalem.
(Alma 7:10). The true Bible says that
Jesus was born in Bethlehem (Matt.
2:1) The Book of Mormon also said
that the early followers of Christ were
referred to as "Christians" in 73 B.C.
(Alma 46:15) The true Bible says the
term "Christians" was first used by
Paul at Antioch about 100 years later.
(Acts 11:26b)
Third, the Book of Mormon con-
tains several internal contradictions
such as Ope God or plural Gods—
(Mormon 7:7), Is God spirit of flesh?
(Alma 22:8-11), and One Creator or
many— (Nephi 2:14). Also, the late
Mormon President Lorenzo Snow
said," As man is, God once was, as
God now is, man may become."
If that's true, where did the first
man come from who became the first
god?
Fourth, the Mormon view of God
is that he is material, that he is a
creature who organized the universe
out of preexistent matter, that he is
not omnipotent, not omniscient, but
increasing in knowledge, that he is
not eternal and that he is one of many
gods.
The true Bible says, "For I am
God, and not man-the Holy One
among you.” (Hosea 11:9), "I the
Lord do not change." (Malachi 3:6),
"Before me no god was formed, nor
will there be one after me." (Isaiah
43:10), "I am the first and the last;
apart from me there is no God." (Isaiah
44:6), "For you are great and do mar-
velous deeds; you alone are God."
(Psalm 86:10), "Now to the King
eternal, immortal, invisible the only
God, be honor and glory for ever and
ever. Amen." (I Timothy T:17).
Fifth, the Mormon concept of Jesus
is that he was not always God, that he
is one of many savior-gods through-
out the universe, that he was preexis-
tent, he was the spirit brother of Lu-
cifer (the Devil), that he was begotten
of Father through physical relations
with Mary, that he died only for
Adam's sins, and that the basis of
salvation is atonement plus works.
The true Bible says that Jesus was
eternally God, preeminent over all
creation, not created. Unique Son of
God, born by the Holy Spirit over-
shadowing Mary, died for all
humankind's sin and the true basis of
salvation is the atonement of Christ
alone—not works.
Sixth, the Mormons believe in four
levels of the afterlife. 1. The Outer
Darkness, where the contenders of
the faith, murderers, and the "sons of
perdition" will go; 2. The Telestial
Kingdom, which Joseph Smith re-
ferred to as "Hell"; 3. The Terrestial
Kingdom, where the Mormons who
do not completely abide by the law
will go; and 4. The Celestial King-
dom, where you will have achieved
godhood, married and sealed in the
temple, the only eternal life. Even in
their own view, only a rare few Mor-
mons will achieve their concept of
eternal life in heaven.
Seventh, God's word also speaks
against several concepts of Mormon-
ism. As to the apparent visit of the
angel Moroni to Joseph Smith,
Galatians 1:8 says, "But even if we or
an angel from heaven should preach
a gospel other than the one we
preached toyou, let him be eternally
condemned."
And as for the Book of Mormon
being "another gospel" of Jesus
Christ, Revelation 22:18 says, "I warn
everyone who hears the words of the
prophecy of this book: If anyone adds
anything to them, God will add to
him the plagues described in this
book." Verse 19: "And if anyone takes
words away from this book of proph-
ecy, God will take away from him his
share in the tree of life and in the holy
city, which are described in this book."
In conclusion, I believe each per-
son must study the word of God to
know what is right. It's time for the
^Christian community in Brady to
stand up for their faith, proclaim the
gospel of Jesus Christ, and do as it
says in 1 Peter 3:15, " Always be
prepared to give an answer to every-
one who asks you to give the reason
for the hope that you have."
In Christ's Love,

State School board set to vote on textbooks
Another election's coming up in
November that most Texans haven’t
heard about yet: the State Board of
Education will be voting on textbooks
for the school children of the state.
The stakes are high: Parents and
concerned citizens worry about the
impact the texts will have on children
(pick a heated social issue and some-
one likely has an opinion about it) and
publishers are vying for $570 million
in textbook sales.
The battles used to get even
stormier before 1995, when legisla-
tion took away the education board's
power to require textual changes in
books before approving them for
classroom use. Now all the board can
do is approve or reject a particular
battle.
This year it will have more than
200 titles to consider.

After Sept. 11, tighter restrictions
have been implemented at our nation's
borders and we have seen a decrease
in the amount of marijuana coming
across the border. With this decrease
in the amount of marijuana, it seems
as though there has been an increase
in the popularity of Methamphetamine
(meth). And, why not? After all, meth
doesn’t have to cross any borders and
can be made in the privacy of one’s
own kitchen.
In the past few weeks, the McCul-
loch County Sheriff’s Office and the
Southwest Narcotics Task Force, in a
cooperative effort on two different
occasions, recovered meth compo-
nents used in the manufacture of meth
from two different labs in McCulloch
County and also recovered some meth
from both locations. Seven McCul-
loch residents were arrested as a re-
sult of the discovery.
This morning, I ran a quick search
on the internet—it took me one minute
and I came up with various resources
on how to set up a meth lab. One
website offered a book on how to
manufacture meth for only $55, and
claimed the book was “not meant to
encourage anyone to break the law,”
but that the book does show “just how
easily these substances can be manu-
factured.”
Methamphetamine is not new to
McCulloch County. Meth, also known
as “crank,” “crystal-meth,” “glass,”
“ice,” “speed,” “zip” and “quartz,” is
an increasingly common addictive and
mood altering drug that is smoked,
snorted, orally ingested, or injected.
Users who snort or orally ingest
the drug experience a “high” of eu-
phoric feelings, increased wakeful-
ness and activity, and decreased ap-
petite. This state lasts for several hours.
Users who smoke or inject the drug

counter cold and flu remedies. The
solvepts used in manufacturing meth
include alcohol .paint thinner or brake
cleaner, to name a few. Iodine, table
matches, and lithium batteries are also
frequently used and readily available.
While all of these items may have
legitimate purposes, when combined
together, can produce meth. As you
can see, all it takes to manufacture
meth is a trip to a few local Brady
stores for the ingredients and a recipe
from the internet.
The current epidemic of meth abuse
and illicit manufacture is creating new
and substantial risks to our children,
law enforcement and our community
as a whole.

Local law enforcement
agencies give call for help
In order to better serve the needs of local livestock’owners, the Brady
Police Department as well as the McCulloch County Sheriffs Depart-
ment are asking all livestock owners to help in identifying their cattle,
horses, goats, sheep, etc.
"Due to the hazards of having livestock stray out on to highways and
county roads, we request that all livestock owners fill out the following
information form and send it to the Brady Police Department at 209
South Elm Street or the McCulloch County Sheriffs Department at 300
West Main Street in Brady," said police chief John Stewart.
This form will enable both departments to properly identify owners
of loose livestock so that the rightful owners can be notified and
livestock secured.
