News from the
Retired Teachers
Association
The McCulloch County Retired
Teachers Association met March 20
in the Brady Independent School
District board room. The meeting
was called to order by President
Mildred Weatherman, who also led
the group in the Pledge to the Flag
and prayer.
Secretary/treasurer Frances Hun-
tington read the minutes from the
previous meeting. The minutes were
approved and Mrs. Huntington re-
ported a balance of $1,848.83.
Legislative Chairman Happy
Hubbard reported on the current sta-
tus of bills HR2638 and S1523, which
are Government Pension Offset
(GPO) and Windfall Elimination Pro-
vision (WEP) respectively. His re-
port generated some discussion. Mr.
Hubbard passed out information and
contact addresses to the members in
regard to said bills.
Mrs. Weatherman reminded mem-
bers to keep their volunteer hours and
reported communications she had
received, including election flyers and
a reminder that $5 will be received by
the local unit for each new member.

that.
Were you watching the speed skat-
ing event at this year’sOlympic games
when the world's record was broken
twice? First one American skater
broke it, and in the very next heat
another American skater broke the
newly set record.
Well, the Brady Lions Club is
doing the same thing. In this column
two weeks ago I bragged on our new
record of 33 members in attendance
at the March 7th meeting. Now, on
March 21st we had 35 Lions present.
That’s a lot of “roaring!”
We also had a really good pro-
gram last Thursday. Lion (Police
Chief) John Stewart brought Phyllis
Barbour, who is Director of The Ha-
ven. That’s the one-year-old family
violence shelter in Brady.
Phyllis(Yes, she’s married toLion
Mike Barbour.) told us about the
physical improvements that have been
made to their facility over the past
She asked that members invite pro-
spective members to the May lun-
cheon.
Winifred Burk reported on book-
plates available for an accurate count
of books to be donated. The count is
for the period from July 1, 2001 to
July 1,2002. Head Start students will
be the recipients of books this year.
Members will bring a book to the
April meeting and, if necessary, the
committee will buy more books.
The state convention will meet in
Waco on April 14-15. Jessalu Lorck,
Eloise Ficke and Mildred Weather-
man will attend. The spring meeting
will be in Early on April 30.
Eloise Ficke reported that the Cafe
at the Depot is available for meetings
and lunch to follow for the coming
year. A motion was made and the
motion carried.
Condolences were extended to
member Alvin Roesler in the passing
of his wife. A motion was made to
send a memorial in memory of mem-
ber T. Wood. This motion carried.
In lieu of the scheduled program
and unavailability of speaker,
Suzanne Price, the president, asked
each member to tell about their first
teaching position, what they taught,
and any interesting stories.
Those that participated included
Happy Hubbard—Brady, math/ge-
ometry; Alvin Roesler—
Breckenridge in San Antonio; Clive
Mench—New York, Boys School;
Maedell Long—LaMarque, elemen-
tary P.E.; Eloise Ficke—attended
college at Midwestern with five chil-
dren, Windthorst, sixth grade and
third grade on Navajo Reservation
during her career;

Paso, third grade; Winifred Burk—

the principal that she would "like the
coach." She did. She married him.
Frances concluded the program by
telling a humorous story illustrating
the difference between teachers and
educators.
The next meeting is scheduled for
April 10.
