In the late 1920s and '30s,
northern McCulloch County
communities banded together
for reunions, usually held in the
summer as an opportunity for
politicians to tout their quali-
fications for office. One held
in July 1923 was billed as Old
Settlers Reunion. There was
free barbecue, pickles and
bread at the old picnic grounds
on Elm Creek. All citizens who
had resided in McCulloch or
Coleman County for 40 years or
more were the honored guests,
sponsored by citizens of Fife,
Lohn, Waldrip and Rockwood.
Those reunions appeared to
attract only those living in
the area. Back in those days,
people did not have time or
resources for traveling as they
do today.
