UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN n. ICENNEY, OF BRENHAM, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-TONGS.
Spccifieation furulirg part of Letters Patent No. 151,986, dated June 16, 1874; application filed
Angust 8, 1873.2'o all whom it ncma concern
Be it known that I, MAUIr N M. KEINNEY.
of Brenham, in the county of Washington,
State of Texas, have invented a new and use-
ful Improvement in Fire-Tongs; and I here-
by declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, reference being
had to the accompanying drawing forming
part of this specification.
The invention consists in a fire-tongs, each
leg of which is forked below the joint some-
what in the form of the letter Y. The diverg-
ing ends of the y-shaped legs of the tongs are
bent in the usual shape of the hips of tongs
and riveted together, forming a joint of two
separate rivets, so that a straight line passing
through the axis of one rivet, and prolonged,
passes also through the axis of the other.
The drawing represents a perspective view.
In the drawing, P and P' are the legs of
the tongs, each forked below the joint. Both
prougs of both the forked legs are bent in the
usual shape of the hips of tongs, and united
to form joints at P and R' by being formed
into flat disks, (joint-bearings,) and riveted
with rivets of suitable metal. The two joint
ends of the leg P' are shouldered to fit overthe edges of the disks of the leg P. The lat-
ter are eccentric, being circular and concen-
tric to the rivets in that part of their circum-
ferenee over which the shoulders of the leg P'
work in opening and closing the tongs, and
tangent to the above-mentioned circle at the
point reached by the shoulders of the leg P'
when the tongs are open, the extent of the
tongs being regulated by the shoulders of the
leg P' coming against the eccentric circnmfer-
ence of the disks of leg P. Both prougs of
the legs P are continued above the joints R
R', and united at S, forming the handle of the
tongs, so that, in fact, the leg P and handle S
are one piece split, so as to form braces andl
joint-bearings for the forked enld of the leg P'.
having described my invention, what I claim
as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
is-
The leg P and handle S formed in one piece,
and split to form braces and joint-bearings for
the forked end of the leg ', substantially as
described.
