to a stop when Lindbergh, *w.
eyed but smiling, got up from the
Beat from where he had ao long «at
und In a casual voice almost drowned
ty cheers of thousands said with
charming simplicity, "well, here we
are."
He put a leg over the side of the
cockpit and It was grasped by a
dozen hands. So was his other leg
as soon as he could get it out of his
machine. Holding him high and
cheering him, with cheers that came
from the heart, as well aA the lungs,
the crowd took him to itself-
The police did their best to get
the.young herco and save him from
those to whom he had become a
friend, a hero, a sportsman to ad-
mire forever, but they were helpless
rgainst the common impulse. Ig-
lioring the swinging butons of Lhe
gendarmes and the loud voiced
shouts of soldiers anxious to bring
order out of delirious but very hu-
irán enthusiasm the crowd of com-
mon people whirled, about the young
man from America held r.loft and
smiling, and seemingly a bit bewild-
ered on the arms of a few sturdy
souls.
For half an hour they pushed one
another this way and that, trying
to take young Lindbergh from his
plane to the administration build-
ings on the landing field, where
rotee! men of his own country and
of France had long been waiting to
welcome him with due formality.
When finally they got him there,
liia tired and trembling fingers w.>re
grasped in a handshake of America's
embassador to France, Myron T. Mer-
rick, and by Frenchmen of high po
sition.
But Lindbergh was too wJeary,
seemingly, to know what it was all
about, ile smiled and said, "Thank
You, I am awfully happy," and then
his fatigue could be l'ought off 110
longer and he seemed t<> go to sleep
standing there on his feet.
Outside the crowd was howling
for a sight ol' the hero who lias won
the heart of the French as no mail
has done before. Brilliant search-
lights were focused on the balcony
ol the building, into which Lind-
bergh had been carried. Hut the
crowd had to lie disappointed—Lind-
bergh could do no more.
The American ambassador came to
ther balcony and waved the aviator's
helmet at the crowd, which kept
fcliouting "The pilot-—The pilot. Let
us see Lindbergh."
Lindbergh, asleep on his feet was
lifted up and carried to an automo-
bile and hurried to Paris, a few miles
away, to sleep after so many hours
v;hen even to close his eyes for a
moment might have meant death.
Tonight lie lies in bed in his coun-
try's embassy. It was after mid-
night when he reached there—41
hours after he got out of bed in
New York to make the great adven-
ture in which already so many others
had failed.
It was on the ambassadors insist-
ence that the youth permitted him-
self to go to the embassy, and the
car bad difficulty in making its way
thru tha traffic to the residence of
Am«Tfca'j 'official representative.
There French aviators assisted the
bird man to alight. Me stumbled
as hesleptintheirai ma. .11
as he slept in. their arms.
"(iood old fellow," they shouted,
as they bade him goodnight.
The world must wait until to-
morrow to hear from Lindbergh's
lips the story of tho flight that
has made him forever famous.
What thoughts he had while fly-
ing in solitude through two days
and a night along the American
cont inent, across I lie Atlantic, over
the fields of France, hidden from
his weary eyes by tho darkness of
night -these things only young
Lindbergh knows tonight, for he
was t.00 tired at the ued of hiij
long voyage to say nothing to any
body.
''I went to sleep several times"
Lindbergh said. "But was lucky

A tale of a thrilling holdup on the
Colorado Springs-Pueblo highway late
last night was related to police au-
thorities here this morning by Mrs.
Edna Herrón of Borger, Texas.
According to the story told to po-
lice officials, Mrs. Herrón was rid-
ing in a Ford sedan with a man ami
his wife from Texas, who were on
their way to the Pacific coast. Mrs-
Herrón was on her way to Denver to
join her husband who is a traveling
salesman. They left Pueblo about 1U
o'clock last, night and a short ways
cüt from the city, two men stooped
into the highway and tried to flag
them down. The man who was driv-
ing the Ford kept 011 going at a fast
rate of speed but the two holdup
men fired at the car, puncturing the
tires. The party then stopped and the
two holdup men arriving 011 the
scene took 4S from Mrs. Herrón and
$180 from the man driver of the
Ford, according to the story told
Chief Hugh 1). Harper of the police
department.
The party then came 011 into Colo-
rado Springs where Mrs. Herrón was
dropped on West Colorado avenue.
What became of the driver of the car
and his wife is not known, but he
failed to make any report to the po-
lice offiicals here of the story.
Mrs. Herrón was unable to locate
her husband in Denver this morn1-
ing and wired her father in Seattle,
Wash., for financial assistance as
the highwaymen had taken all her
money.
City detectives here are investigat-
ing the case.

IOWA CITY, la., — Harvard met
the University of Iowa in a debate

Delirious Joy.
The airman was lifted from the
seat, where for two days and a nii^lit
he sat fixed, guiding his pMne over
land and sea and for 40 minutes
he was hardly able to talk or do any-
thing else, except let himself be
carried along by a mass of men
made delirious with joy at his a-
chlevement
Never has an aviator of any nation,
even king or ruler, had a greatei
qr more spontaneous welcome from
the hearts of the common people of
France. The very recklessness of
I is endeavor, as it appeared, appeal-
ed to the quick emotional imagina-
tion of Frenchmen, und hey were
quick to respond with everything
their own hearts could give.
So Bitterness.
All ties of nationalism were for-
gotten by the LebrOuguet. throng.
They saw Lindbergh only a man who
^hud brilliantly gambled with death,
¿rid won. There was regret, ot
course, for Ntingesser and Coli, and
regret, too, thut the daring French
men had not been the first. But
there was 110 bitterness in their
greeting of the American winner.
'I'lie American Winner.
The roar of his motor for which
they had been waiting for hours,
came out ot the clear night sky to
the ears of the multitude. Police
lines were swept aside as thousands
surged over the field to welcome
tho man who had won their hearts
and had earned immortal fame.
"There ne Í3," the cry went up
as the luys of the searchlluglits
plearned upon the monoplane grace-
iully descending from the darkness
which enveloped all and through
which only the sound of the motor
gave warning of his approach. At
this instant the crowds began their
