FORT WORTH RUMOR

Chemists and Stockmen Say It Has
Many Possibilities—Pulp for
Making Paper.
San Antonio, Texas, April 21.—The
cactus which grows so spontaneously
over the southwest Texas and many
parts of the west appears to have un-
limited possibilities. Mr. Burbank, by
his processes of nature shocking, has
denuded it of its spines and more
than doubled the size of the blade
This makes it fine forage for stock,
both In the green state and ins the
form of ensilage. Recent experiments
made by chemists prove that the
juice of this plant, when properly
treated, is highly productive of al-
cohol and that" the residue makes
splendid paper. It sis also understood
that several \ by-products obtained In
the process of making alcohol have
valuable commercial usages.
It has been demonstrated by the
stockmen of southwest Texas for
years that the native cactus, when
the spines have been singed off, is
an excellent stock food, particularly
at the season of the year when
range is scarce. In a number of lo-
caltities, herds of cattle have been
fed for two months or more at a
time entirely upon cactus from which
the spines had been singed. The ani-
mals not only li.ved, but thrived
and gained weight upon this food,
proving conclusively that it is high-
ly nutritious. The discovery that it
is a fit plant for animals’ food
came about by herdsmen noting that
deer ate, the leaves of the cactus!
plant when the spines had been
singed off by some hunter’s or tarv.
eler's campfire. To use the eznct
words of one of the pioneers: “The
deer started something and then we
concluded to try cactus on cows.”
It is understood that a number of
stockmen in southwest Tezas who
have been .feeding singed cactus will
apply the Burkbank method and grow
the plant extensively for forage pur
poses. But while this is going on, oth |
er experiments are being made and
It is predicted that much of the
paper in the near future will be made
from the pulp of this plant.
