Absentee voting in Texas for the s
1930 presidential election set an B
all-time record, a survey by The C
Associated Press showed Saturn D
day.
Using the absentee vote as 1 8
guide, a record turnout of 2,500,00 N
Texans is expected in Tuesday’s i
general election. This would meal M
about 93 per cent of the 2.700,0 H
qualified voters would vote. g
The current record of 2,084,000 1
votes was set in 1952, when Texts 1
went Republican and helped elect i
a native son, Dwight Eisenhower, 1
president over Democrat Adai 1
Stevenson. 1
Another native son, Sen Ln- 1
den B. Johnson, it the Democratic 1
vice presidential candidate tus ■
year. I
Absentee voting ended Fride. 1
The upsurge in absentee voting 1
was in sharp contrast to that in 1
the first Democratic primary last 1
May 7, when the absentee vie 1
was about half that cast for Bel
first primary in 1956. Political b 1
servers blamed the low absence!
vote in May on indifference toward 1
local races and the early primay. 1
But since las' May the Deno- 1

time. Johnson is campaigning 1
through Texas in the last five ays 1
-------before the election. 1
The state's four largest dies I
showed increases in 1960 absentee 1
voting. Bexar County (San An-I
tonio) was up 73 per cent, Harris 1
(Houston) 43, Da'las 31 and far- 1
