The brief announcement said
the newest blast was set off in

the arctic region.
The text of the announcement:
"The Atomic Energy Commission
announced this afternoon that the
Soviet Union conducted a nuclear
detonation in the atmosphere ear-
ly today. The detonation occurred
in the vicinity of Novaya Zemlya
and had a yield of several mega-
tons.”
The blast had been reported
earlier Friday from Japan and
Sweden.
Although this was the 21st So-
viet test announced by the AEC
