HOUSTON (AP) - Mrs Jesse
H. Jones, widow of the late war-
time secretary of commerce and
publisher of the Houston Chroni-
cle, died Monday.
Mrs. Jones, 90, died in her
apartment in the downtown La-
mar Hotel.
Jones and the former Mary
Gibbs of Mexia were married
Dec. 15, 1922. Jones died June 1,
1956.
One of Texas' most noted phi-
lanthropists, Mrs Jones and her
late husband founded Houston En-
dowment Inc. in 1938 for educa-
tional, religious and other chari-
table undertakings.
A number of hospital, church
and school buildings over the state
have been named for Mrs. Jones.
The foundation was perhaps her
greatest interest. She never
missed a board meeting unless —
prevented by illness.
She was particularly interested
in scholarships for women.
More than 30 colleges and uni-
versities have received Mary
Gibbs Jones scholarships in his-
tory, pediatrics, home economics,
nursing, teaching, business, physi-
cal therapy, and other fields.
Mrs. Jones had been ill several
weeks.
Survivors include a granddaugb-
ter, Mrs. John A. Beck.
