Mustangs Serve
Notice in 3-AAA
Of Title Intent
By KEN ESTES
Reporter-News Sports Writer
According to a popular song, "it’s a long, long time
from May to December.”
Now, in all actuality that is really quite a logical
statement, one to which most everybody—including
Sweetwater—would adhere. Sweetwater, however, could i
probably go the song-writer one better, and, being a ■
little more specific, state that is also a long, long—in- .
terminable even—time from------------------------£
early September to late Oc-
tober.
During that span, Sweetwater
plays five non-district football
games, and, because of a rather
stout slate of intersectional foes,
the Mustangs usually emerge
from these five games with a los-
ing record and a number of injur-
ies.
This brings forth the following
question: "Can a non - district
schedule be too tough for a team
—in respect to morale and to phy-
sical well-being?”
Well, for the last two years, the
answer to that query appeared to
be "yes." Sweetwater failed to
live up to its predistrict favor
ite’s role in both of those years,
after sustaining frequent non-con-
ference defeats, and this year, the
Mustangs were certainly no more
successful - winning only one of
five non-district starts.
But the effect this year was
totally different. Last Friday
Sweetwater literally burst loose
from its early-season shackles and
dumped previously unbeaten
Lake View, 36-14, in a District
Weatherford, respectively — and,
if Graham should win, the race
will boil down into a three-team
fight, since Weatherford earlier
sustained a 14-0 defeat at the
hands of Brownwood.
Brownwood holds a half-game
edge over Breckenridge and Gra-
ham by virtue of having played
one more district game. The Lions
are 4-0 in conference action and
7-0 for the season.

seem entirely possible that the
Mustangs will realize their pre-
season potential in 1962.
Two strong challengers — La-
mesa and Brownfield — must be
dealt with, however. Lamesa and
Brownfield, like Sweetwater, forg-
ed to the fore-front in 3-AAA war-
ring last week with impressive
victories.
The Tornadoes walloped Snyder.
36-23, and Brownfield — as ex-
pected — socked Colorado City,
27-0. And this week, this formid-
able trio should entrench them
selves further as the teams to
beat, since they simply exchange
opponents and thus avoid any di-
rect clashes.
The champion conference of 3-
AAA, the top-heavy 4-AAA align-
ment. enters into crucial activity
this week, however, as the top
four clubs — easily the standouts
of the league — pair off for two
games.
Brownwood and Graham, the
4-AAA co-favorites, place their
perfect season records in jeop-
ardy against Breckenridge and

You certainly couldn't say that
Merkel Coach Carroll Benson is
a sneaky sort of a fellow. He's
been around the Abilene area for
quite some time now — 21 years
to be exact — and he, of course,
is generally quite well-known.
