7IEGFELD could not have produced a more brilliant
4 pageant-biography than the film of his life, "The Great
Ziegfeld,” which opened a road engagement at the Hollywood
last night.
For once the pre-show ballyhoo failed to equal the pic-
ture itself...
More than a biography, it is rather a monument to the
late “Follies" master. So novel*— -----:------—
. was the show so stunning its
splendor that last night’s audi-
ence sat spellbound through more
than three hours with no thought
of restlessness.
If the producers took liberties
with facts, if they painted a pic-
ture-composite of the more ideal-
istic side of Ziegfeld’s life—call
it historical license. It really
doesn't matter.
Too much can not be said of
- the huge cast. The superb acting
of the three lead stars failed to
overshadow Frank Morgan, who;
played the role of Jack Billings,
Ziegfeld's lifelong rival and friend.
Morgan in our eyes was eclipsed
by no other star.
In the role of Billings, he was
in the first scenes of young Zieg-
feld’s rising career, and was the
last to shake the great showman’s
hand just, before he dled.
As a member of a rival partner-
ship producing company it was he
who loaned Ziegfeld money to
produce his Follies. Sally, The
Three Musketeers, Show Boat and
many others.
He loaned him $500 which
Ziegfeld spent in snatching Anna
Held, French actress, right out
from under Billings' nose. He
sent her orchids that turned the
trick for Ziegfeld.
sauntering in the rain and upon
hearing her immediately enticed
her into coming to a rehersal that
afternoon. .
THE Winter Garden, Magnolia
1 and Hemphill St. night spot,
has remodeled and redecorated
for its summer patrons. Lee
Downs' orchestra is in the band-
stand.
Louise Rainer Scores
TEMPESTUOUS Anna Held
1 could not have been more
charming than Luise Rainer, who
played her role in the film. The
half-child, half-woman allure pt
the sparkling little French actress
was delightful.
■ After she divorced Ziegfeld, to
bring him back to her, she said—
she called to congratulate him on
his re marriage to Billie Burke.
With a laugh in her throat and
tears in her lovely eyes she makes
the scene heartbreaking and pa-
thetic.
Far too little was seen of
Myrna Loy as Billie Burke, who
at last brought marital happiness
to the philandering Ziegfeld.
--Wiliam Powell in the role of
Ziegfeld was a more picturesque
figure than "Ziggy" himself.
After seeing all too brief scenes
in which Fannie Brice appeared,
Fort Worth people will force Billy
Rose, her hueband, to bring her
here.
A number of Dallasites were
spotted in last night's audience.
Among them was Eddie Barr,
Dallas Dispatch columnist. The
same show opens today at the
Rialto in Dallas.
Ten girls, most of them
scheduled to appear in Billy
Rose’s show, have organized a
line team at the Professional
School of Dancing where they
are stepping off those bucks and
soft shoes as per the Little Bar-
num's instructions. Of uniform
size, blonde and shapely, the
line, says teacher Jack Harris,
is a lovely sight for sore eyes.

Watch Out!
WORTH gets “Show Boat" with
VV Irene Dunne, Allan Jones and
Helen Morgan Saturday. The
press sheet says it will exert an
emotional grip on- you. Better
look out.
The midnight show will be "The
Princess Comes Across,” with
Fred McMurray and Carole Lom-
bard. The Worth will have you
know that. It's not another of
those Imaginary fairy castle
things. Something about a Sadie
Glutz posing as royalty meeting
Gus Smith, also an Imposter.

KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 11.—
An extract which has proved use-
ful in treating hemophilia, the
hereditary bleeder’s disease, some-
times called the curse of the
Hapsburgs, was reported by Drs.
R. Cannon Eley and Charles F.
McKhann of Boston at the meet-
ing. here of the American Acad-
emy of Pediatrics.
The extract is a brown turbid
material obtained from the pla- -
centa, the same maternal tissue
from which Dr. McKhann obtain-
ed a substance effective in con-
trolling measles. It helps hemo-
philia patients because it makes'
their blood clot faster. In hemo-
philia the patients are in danger
of bleeding to death from even a
slight cut because their blood
clots so slowly.
The new extract has been given
to 18 patients, Dr. Kley reported.
In 14 of them, the blood clotted
as rapidly as that of normal per-
sons. The extract has been more
helpful in children than adults.
It Is given by mouth, usually- at
midnight or in the morning be-
fore breakfast, and ice-cold alka-
line carbonated water is given
before and after the dose. The
exact dose and frequency of treat-
ment has to be determined for
each patient, it appears from Dr.
Eley’s report.
For three days, beginning May 19, Groesbeck and Mexia will
jointly sponsor as a Texas Centennial celebration, a tribute to the
early pioneers who lost their lives at the hands of Comanche
Indians during the siege of Fort Parker a century ago. The his.
toric fort, shown above, as visualized by the artist, is being re-
constructed from Centennial funds on its original site in the new
1600-acre Fort Parker State Park on Highway 14 between Groes.

two numbers were called out and
1 each applicant was told to Jot
down the second number. Several
minutes later, Mrs. Raphael ex-
plained, each applicant must tell
the examiner the first and unwrit-
ten number. Mrs. Raphael gave
