REGAIN HEALTH
Doctor Reports Little If Any
Improvement Shown
i . In 67 Cases
ST. LOUIS. May 15—Permanent
disability with inability to get
about enough to earn a living is
the fate of ginger jake paralysis
patients. Dr. William M. Bevis of
the Veterans’ Administration Fact
utility at Mountain View, Tenn.,
told members of the American
Psychiatric Assn., here.
9 When this paralytic disease,
due to drinking adulterated Ja-
maica ginger in the days before
repeal, swept the country in 1930
and 1931, physicians believed the
effects would be temporary and
• that the patients would recover
fully. Such has not been the
case. Dr. Bevis reported here 67
cases of patients he has examined
in the past three years who are
still disabled: In the majority
there has been very slight if any
improvement since they first were
paralysed by the adulterated

Marked weakness of the legs
and back, waddling gait, wasting
of hands and legs, ape-like look-

shortened muscles and. tendons
are the present result of the. con-
dition. Dr. Bevis showed motion
pictures of some of the men to
illustrate their condition.
Late marriages may favor the
development of mental disease in
the children of such marriages.
Dr. Alfred Gordon of Philadel-

Rumor Says Secretary Of
Commerce to Quit
Saripps-Howard Newspaper Alliance
WASHINGTON, May 15,- Sed-
retary of Commerce Daniel Cal-
houn Roper, whose administration
has been marked by continued
turmoil, is planning to leave the
cabinet next January, it was re-
ported today.
Commerce Department circles
were buzzing with the report, and
important Democratic politicians
understood the switch would take
place after the elections. The re-
port was not officially, confirmed.
Roper, who is 69, might either
retire or return to the firm of tax
lawyers which he headed here
from 1921 to 1932. His retire-
ment probably would lead to a
shakeup of the Commerce De-
partment. 1
Roper is known as a protege of
Senator .McAdoo, under whom he
served as internal revenue com-
missioner when McAdoo was sec-
retary of the treasury. His friend-
ship with President Roosevelt
dates from the Wilson administra-
tion.
