A field notebook containing handwritten notes by botanist Sherwin Carlquist during a field expedition in 1973 to South Africa. The notebook front and back cover are made of black-colored, textured, paperboard with sewn binding along the left edge. The spine is covered with red cloth-tape. The notebook has worn edges and dirt stains throughout. The contents of the notebook record Carlquist's field observations and voucher specimen collecting events. Carlquist's botanical descriptions detail the plant's natural habitat, taxonomic identification, seasonal observations, weather conditions, plant morphology, abundance and distribution, and associated plant species, insects and other pollinators. His notes also document occasions when he photographed plants or collected liquid-preserve samples. The field notes also include Carlquist’s hand-drawings of plant parts and maps. The notebook covers Carlquist collector numbers 4957-5133.
