The notebook has worn edges and dirt stains throughout. The contents of the notebook record Carlquist's field observations and voucher specimen collecting events. They include the unique collector numbers used to identify the specimens; collecting dates and locations; navigational directions to specific areas; geographic features and elevations; and stratigraphic details. Carlquist's botanical descriptions detail the plant's natural habitat, taxonomic identification, seasonal observations, weather conditions, plant morphology, abundance and distribution, and associated plant species, insects and other pollinators. His notes also document occasions when he photographed plants or collected liquid-preserve samples. The field notes also include Carlquist’s hand-drawings of plant parts and maps. The notebook covers Carlquist collector numbers 4957-5133.
