TEXANS

- WASHINGTON - Paintings,
photographs and objects of par-
ticular interest to their districts
adorn the office walls of most
Texas members of Congress.
e: And, of course Sens. Ralph
a Yarborough and John Tower
Thursday, December 16, 1965
have displays that would make
any visitor readily aware that he
was in a Texan’s office—pic-
tures of the Alamo and blown-
up aerial photographs of the
Dallas and Houston skylines.
"These pictures educate some
Easterners who drop in our of-
fice," chuckled Ken Towery,
former Cuero newspaperman
and now administrative assis-
tant to Tower.
"A workman in the building
near Crockett. He could hardly
believe we have such forests.
He had always thought of Texas
only as a land of plains."
A visiting Texan seeking al-
most any Texas representative
could tell almost at a glance
whether he was in the right of-
fice, without checking on the
name plate at the doorway.
Rep. Hake Pickle of Austin
has among an array of interest-
ing and colorful pictures sev-
eral showing the State Capitol
and other such landmarks in his
district as the red-topped admin-
was looking at a big photo-
graph we have of a lake deep inu . .
the piney woods of East Texas | istrative building of Southwest
Texas State College in San Mar-
cos. He also has some fine photo-
graphs of him with his No. 1
constituent — President John-
son.
Rep. Eligio (Kika) de la Gar-
za of Mission has pictures and
objects which reflect the Mexi-
can culture of the verdent Rio
Grande Valley.
Rep. Richard White of El
Paso has pictures of the Guada-
lupe Mountains and the Big
Bend National Park, as well as
El Paso. Congressmen from else-
where around the state have
aerial photographs of the larg-
est city or cities in their dis-
tricts, or pastoral scenes such
as cattle grazing among blue-
bonnets.
Charles Frandolig, aide to
Houston Rep. Bob Casey, said
of an enormous blown-up aerial
picture of downtown Houston:
"We have to keep putting up a
new one every two or three
years, the skyscrapers spring up
so fast—and that’s the truth.
Newest object of pride in
Casey’s office is a Texas. flag,
about 3% by 5 feet, which he
brought back from Viet Nam,
Visiting with American fighting
forces there in late November,
he spent a day and night aboard
the aircraft carrier Ticondero-
ga. He flew out to the ship,
watched planes take off on
bombing missions. In the enlist-
ed men’s mess room he ate with
several Texas boys who had
been told that a Texas congress-
man was coming aboard. To his
surprise, he was presented with
a Texas flag which they had
made the night before from
bunting in stock on the carrier.
Casey had an of the boys at
the table, along with some oth-
Sue 4 T
ers from Texas who came over
from nearby tables, jot down
their names in a little notebook
he carried. The names and
hometowns they entered includ-
ed:
William R. Gilcrest, Abilene;
W. H. Wallace, Corpus Christi;
Lewis Hempkins, Denison; Dan-
iel Vara and Manuel V. Marti-
nez. El Paso; C. D. Clower,
Beaumont; Louis R. Amaimo,
Taft; D. R. Wilson! and John
W. Scott, Fort Worth; John Tal-
ley Bell, Sulphur Springs; G.
D. Matlock, Galveston; Bobby J.
