A Good Sign, This Co-operation
Government and business at times dif-
fer, but we’ve noted some finer examples
of co-operation in connection with gir and
7 water conservation and other pressing
social and economic problems.(
Typical of the change is the comment
, of the president of the American Petroleum
Institute, Frank N. Ikard, “. . . industry . . .
has two alternatives ... It can, on its own
initiative, work toward solutions to these
problems by the use of its organizing tal-
eats and technical expertise. Or it can set
up a holding action and force government
in which the petroleum industry is cooperat-
ing with government. In air and water
conservation alone, the industry is spend-
ing more than a million dollars a day and
expenditures for these purposes are mount-
ing rapidly. In addition, the industry is
deeply involved in voluntary national pro-
grams for urban renewal and for the train-
ing and hiring of the hard-core unemploy-
ed. It is also placing heavy emphasis on at-
tractive designs for new service stations and
on landscaping and other improvements for
existing stations. Oil companies are also
active in training men about to leave the
armed services for jobs in civilian life.
