BERLIN, Oct. 14. — (AP) — Sinking of the BritUh
battleship Royal Oak brought official Nazi claims today
that Germany had destroyed about 80,000 tons of British
worships in the first six weeks of the war.
(ierman ut'l'icials assorted two aii plaiu- carriers (Com
lajroous and Ark Royal). one battleship (Royal Oak), one
unnamed heavy cruiser and one destroyer had been sunk
ami the buttle cruiser Hood had been so seriously damajr-
od it would In-oni of comnü.'wion for several months.
\"U , 11r the Royal Oak's destruction was first an-
nounced today by tin British Admiralty and soon there-
after confirmed by the German high command. So glee,
fully was the new* received that the exhiliration almost
took on the proportion of national rejoicing.
Everywhere Germans talked about it. Newspapers
published extra editions giving full details of the Royal
Oak's armament and history.
# While official quarters did
not say so, there wai some
indication Germans have d««
veloped a new torpedo that
has little difficulty with the
heavy steel plate* on battle-
ships.
Semi-official circles laud-
ed the aid airplanes have
given the German navy in lo-
cating British ships for sub-
marine attack.
