"WHV HIE?"
Haunted by the Patmos vision
of John the Krannelist. Colum-
bus Bradford, presents In his
book, "Why Die?'' a critical ex-
amination of the Bible's last word
about death.
Possibly no one subject has ab-
sorbed the energies of science and
rellition alike as bus the problem
of death. Science, working with
diets, Klands and vitamins has
pushed the horizon of physical
Hie, many years away. Yet it has
not been able to say: "We have
conquered death."
It el Ik Ion hits always held out
the promise of an eventual vic-
tory over death. "Why Die?" is
based on the Twenty-first Chap-
ter of Revolution, 1-7, Revised
Version. Some slight variations
from the Old Version, the author
contends, make a vltul difference
in the meaning of this passage
Ills main contention is that the
Bible's last word about death, In
the last chapter but one of the
Hood Book, repeals Its first word
ttbout/ death found in Its next to
first chapter. Because el' this re-
jieal he sets forth, human lielims
ought not now to lie dying. In
the second chapter of Genesis II
is written: "Thou shall surely
die.'" The last word In Revela-
tion, XXI Is: "And death shall
b< no more." Since the last word
repeals the first word, "Why
Die?''
This interesting hypothesis Is
elaborated throughout the book
In a competently written form
which reveals the nuthm as an
assiduous student of «acred texts
and as a critical examiner of this
material. Ills conclusion Is tli'at
the Patmos Decree uullfius the
Kden Decree.
"If I am reminded" says (he
Rev. Bradford "that the Bible
says, 'It is appointed unto all
men. once in die' I say 'yes but
that is not Its last word on the
subject.' "
The reader will find tills expo-
sition vi most informational one.
Thi" very earnestness of the au-
thor. who feela that he must be
obedient to the Impulse to write
his convictions is worthy of tin
commendation of oil honest peo-
So this book, penned wholly In
obedience to a reverent Impulse,
leads us on and on through chap-
ter after chapter of urgument In
behalf of the author's premise.
The intrude of Lazarus, raised
from the dead Is discussed In
this the author sees the working
of a fundamental, divine princi-
ple, one in which time has no
significance In (iod's calendur.
The same principle as thai ap-
plied tu La/wrus and which ope-
rated 111 a Tew minutes, may be
applied to a whole race though
i; takes millennia to work It out.
