.CALEB’S DEED REWARDED

The International Uniterm-Sun-
day school lesson for November Mi
Caleb’s Faithfulness Rewarded.
Joshua 14:0-15. --m
By WM. E. GILROY, D. D.
A. Editor Of the Congregationalist
: * Someone some day may write a
book, that is worth while for its
inspiration, on chief lieutenants or
* right band men, or second fiddles,
or whatever one may call those who
are not the chief 'leaders and the
outstanding figures but who bring
to movements that intense alle-
giance, consecration and service
that make them powerful in sup-
port of the leader.
We have read of a florist who
once tore up with disdain the second
prise that he had won at a flower
show; nothing but first prise could
satisfy him. From one standpoint
there may be something commenda-
ble about such an ideal, but the
t world would never get very far
without good second-rate things as
without good second-rate things as
well as first rate things. There
probably is no strength greater
than that of the man who, realizing
■" that he has not the elements of a
w prime leader, a first-rater, puts all
his energy and passion into being a
second-rater or even a third-rater.
To know what one can do, and to
| do it well, to a great secret of
- power and influence. , s
Moses and Aaron
Would Moses have been so great
a leader without the support of
Aaron? Would Paul have been so
successful if he had not had the as-
sociation of the unselfish and cour-
ageous Barnabas? Even the glory
/ of Jesus required the preparatory
work of John the Baptist.
So bora, though Joshua is the
a outstanding leader, the period with
% which we are dealing his glory and
1 his accomplishment must be shared
with Caleb.) They' stand together
as the two men of faith, vision and
courage among the 12 spies.
Caleb’s faith and vision were all
the more remarkable inasmuch as
0 it is claimed by some that he was
not an Israelite by birth but an
Israelite only by faith and adoption.
"In this lesson we find Caleb claim-
ing the reward for his faithfulness,
but it should be noted that Caleb's
faithfulness had not been achieved
simply with the hope of reward. 1
Catoo bad acted with unselfish cour-
age, and, manifestly, if he ware 85 1
years old, as he claims in the les. 1
son, he had not been in a hurry to 1
claim anything for himself.
Promised by Moses
Now, as almatter of fact, he was
simply claiming in the days of set?
tlement in the conquered country
the land that Moses bad promised
him. Undoubtedly he was looking
more to the future than to the past,
and In claiming the reward he was
actuated by the unselfish motive of
wishing to provide a home for his
descendants.
It to a remarkable picture of vigor
and stout heartedness In old age
that Caleb presents in this lesson.
One may discount his claim to have
been as strong as In the day when
Moses had sent him as a spy. Per-
haps It to an inevitable sign of old
age when we begin to say that we
are as young as we ever were, but
it is at least an indication of youth-
ful disposition. 4
Ths man who can feel that way.
and speak that way, at least is not
succumbing easily to the depressions
and weakening effects of age. It to
well when one can meet the enemies
of the soul and the enemies of the
body with optimism, courage and |
determination--,
“Rest From War”
Not the least pleasing feature of
our lesson to the statement that "the
land had rest from war." History
in the Bible as well as to the pages
of profane history, seems often-
times an interminable course of dis-
sention and bloody conflict. But it
is worth while to remember that
there have been periods of peace
and eras of prosperity when the
world has girded itself with now
hops end aspiration.
Caleb had been a man of war,
willing to fight when fighting was
necessary, but his purpose was not
a warlike purpose. His purpose
was to attain a promised land, to
establish peace and righteousness.
Great spies and scouts have not al-
ways been great civilizers.
It is a satisfaction to see this old
and famous spy of Israel settling
down to play his part in pesos and
reconstruction—even ft he was 85
years of age.

' As yet I am as strong this day as I
was in the day that Moses sent me:
as my strength was then, even so to
my strength now, for war, both to
go out, and to come in.
Now therefore give me this moun-
tain, whereof the Lord spake In that
day; for thou heardest in that day
how the Anakims wers there, and
that the cities were great and
fenced: If so be the Lord will be
with me, then I shall be able to drive
them out, as the Lord said. - —
' And Joshua blessed him, and gave
unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh,
Hebron for an inheritance.
Hebron therefore became the In-
heritance of Caleb the son of Jep-
hunneh the Kenezite unto this day,
because that he wholly followed
the Lord God of Israel.
And the name of Hebron before
was Klrjsth-arba, which Arba was
a great mar. among the Anakins.
And the land had rest from war.
Then the children of Judah came
anto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the
son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said
. 6 unto Mm. Thou knowest the thins
7 that the Lord said unto Moses the
, man of God concerning me and thee
* ’ in Kadesh-barnea.
Forty years old was I when Moses
T the servant of the Lord sent me
from Kadesh-barnea to espy out the
land; and I brought him word again
as it was in mins heart.
Nevertheless my brethren that
went up with me made the heart of
the people melt: but Iwholly fol-
4 lowed the Lord my God.
* And Moses sware on that day, say-
ing. Surely the land whereon thy
feet have trodden shall be thine in-
heritance, and thy children's for-
ever, because thou hast wholly fol-
lowed the Lory my God. —
. And now, behold, the Lord hath
F kept me alive, as he said, these forty
and five years, even since the Lord
spake this word unto Moses, while
the children of Israel wandered in -----------
the wilderness: and now, le, I am (Copyright, 1926, NEA Service, Ine.)
