that have been convulsing
audiences for the last two
thousand years.
“A Funny Thing” was based
by its authors, Burt Shevelove
and Larry Gelbart, on hilarious
situations derived from seven
different farces of Plautus, the
Roman playwright who
convulsed audiences in the
Colosseum around 200 B.C.
Regardless of Shakespeare’s
borrowing from Plautus for “A
Comedy of Errors” and the
many other cases of swiping
from the jolly old Roman
playwright, the New York
Magazine declared that “Plautus
never had himself so well
adapted” as in this antic musical,
whose action is still set in
ancient Rome.

uproar as he tries to gain his
freedom by catering to the
r yearnings of his master, and the
master’s lecherous old father, for

a nearby girl-trader. Stan Zareff
(Hysterium) will be seen as a

who is content to remain in
slavery but is pulled into
Pseudolus’s schemes.
J. C. Hoyt (Senex) has the
hilarious role of the aging but
still chipper father; Nancy
Senechal (Philia), the delectable
piece of merchandise; Tom
Sherohman (Lycys), the business
like owner of the girl-market;
Maureen Sadusk (Domina), the
father’s shrewish spouse. Perry
W. Langenstein (Erronius) plays
a neighbor who is constantly
being sent off to run seven times
around the seven hills of Rome.
The cast also includes a group
of beautiful inmates of the
slave-mart - with such names as
