The JEWISH HERALD-VOICE
Rooster Knew When Chanukah Came
Continued from Pane 6
Jerusalem you want may soon
by yours” and the British
Cabinet formally adopted the
Balfour Declaration.
The legal obstacles were
cleared. The military push was
also succeeding. Allenby was
approaching closer to Jerusalem.
He might even make Jerusalem
by Chanukah, but who could
say?
One morning in Decmeber,
Allenby’s mess sergeant
awakens, stretches himself and
asks for a breakfast of ham and
eggs. Such an inappropriate
thought in the Holy Land. But
the mess sergeant was not a Jew .
The British Army carried a
supply of ham, but no one had
seen an

Still

the sergeant kept
waving a white flag; a man
telling him that the Germans and
Turks have fled from Jerusalem.
So it was that on Chanukah
morning, the anniversary of the
day, thousands of years ago, on
which Judas Maccabaeus retook
Jerusalem, entered the Temple
and lit the Chanukah lights,
Allenby retook Jersualem.
Thanks to the rooster.
You ask the question, how
did the rooster know about
Chanukah?
So we ask a question, why
not speak to the rooster?

The sergeant rushes out. If
there is a rooster around, there
must be chickens and hence
eggs. The sergeant runs in the
direction of the rooster’s voice
and he sees something waving.

Discourtesy does not spring
merely from one bad quality, but
from several—from foolish van-
ity, from ignorance of what is
due to others, from indolence,
from stupidity, from contempt
