MARCH OF DIMES
Many Houston mothers
apparently would not loan one
hour of their time to help save a
child’s life.
Pretty shocking statement,
you say. Well, the facts
document it, says the Houston
March of Dimes, whose recent
survey of 2044 women chosen at
random indicated only one of 11
would volunteer for the mothers
march.
What’s that got to do with
saving a child’s life? Plenty, says
Mrs. Vernon (Clarine) Grove,
1 3603 Perthshire, general
chairman of the mothers march
— the often-copied activity
created by the March of Dimes
more than two decades ago.
Nationally, the March of
Dimes raised $8.5 million in the
mothers march, about one-third
of its $25 million total to spark
the fight to prevent birth
defects, recognized by health
experts as the No. 1 child health
program.
More marchers, says Mrs.
Grove, mean more money to
research causes and cures for the
1700 catalogued birth defects
and to reduce the annual toll of
500,000 deaths and 2 5 0,000
defects.
Mrs. Grove, mother of three,
says if more mothers would loan
one hour of their time many
devastating forms of birth
defects could be prevented, just
as the March of Dimes, dubbed
the Mission Possible Team,
stopped polio with the Salk and
Sabin vaccines.
She urges volunteers to call
the March of Dimes at 62 2-0080
day or night. Another child
could be saved from a life of

PARIS, (JTA) - A Libyan
newspaper bitterly attacked the
Soviet Union as an imperialist
State.” The paper, Ath-Thawrah,
published in Tripoli, condemned
Moscow for its support of India
against Pakistan. “How can we
believe the Soviet Union when it
is killing hundreds of people
daily on one hand and calling for
disarmament, condemning
Zionist aggression against the
Arabs and US aggression in
Southeast Asia on the other?”
Ath-Thawrah asked in an
editorial Dec. 15. Some
observers here saw significance
in the attack inasmuch as the
Libyan press conforms to
government policies. Libya,
Egypt and Syria were united in a
federation in September.
