“I gaw” remarked (he old printer
to a Chicago Post reporter “the word
‘balance’ used in the Tribune the
other day. There is something the
matter over In that shop for there is
or used to be an Inflexible rule on
the style card which said that the
word balance’ must never be used
except in connection with finance or
commerce and that remainder should
be used instead. If this rule happen-
ed through inadvertence or design
to be broken there was always a
heap of trouble. One night one
of the reporters turned in a pretty
story about a painter who had fallen
from a scaffold and been killed. ‘He
lost bls balance’ the reporter wrote
and fell to the sidew-alk.’ Well the
eopy-roader let the stuff' go through
but the printer who got the ‘take’
containing this sentence was more
particular about observing the style
of the paper and unhesitatingly set it
•He lost his remainder.’ The proof-
reader marked ’remainder’ out and
sent it to the ‘ring man.' But the
‘ring man’ knew the style and
was afraid to change it and
it went ‘remainder.’ When tbe editor
read the sentence he sent for the city
editor the'eity editor sent for the
copy-reader the copy-reader blamed
tbe proof-reader the proof-reader
blamed the compositor and the com-
positor dragged in the ‘ring man.’
When the responsibility had thus
been definitely fixed tbe editor stern-
ly demanded of the ring man’ why
he had not corrected the proof. The
‘ring man’ went up stairs and got tbe
style card brought it down and
pointed out tbe rule about the use of
•balance’ and remainder and walked
quietly out with never a word. I
ended there.”
Of course Italy don’t want to fight
but this little flare up has taught this
government the necessity of having a
better navy. Economy ia to be ad-
mired but it should not be carried to
such an extent as to place any depart-
ment of our government at the mercy
of even tbe greatest government on
the face of the globe.—Fort Wayne

Grand 1/iew Addition!
IT IS NOW ON THE MARKET -3TS .’LOCATION.
Grand View addition is situated about two and one-fourth miles Southeast or the
Postoflice which is now the center of population of the city. It covers a range of high hills
about two hundred feet abovethe surroundingcountry. Consequency the drainage is away
from it on all sides.
LINES CORNERS AND SUBDIVISIONS.—This fine property was originally survey-
ed in 1845 by Joseph A. Tivy and the corners actually established upon the ground with wit-
ness trees to each one and the bounary lines nearly marked and all of which are clearly
identified now; therefore there is absolutely no pogibiity of changes in lines wade by every
new surveyor who may survey there in the future. This Subdivision has been made and
carefully surveyed by W. M. lack county surveyor and John D. Rullmaun surveyor and
draughtsman. The corners of all the blocks are established and all streets are monumented
The streets all run east and west and north and sonth. and the avenues are laid out and fit
the contour ot the hills James avenue connecting East End Addition with South Heights
and Park Terrace additions. Each block is so situated as to get the benefit of the fine view
as well as the prevailing southeast wind. u.
ADVANTAGES.—On many of these hills fine building stone (the same as that in the
walls of the Missions and Alamo) crop out and esn be cut and quarried with pick axes ia
blocks of suitable sizes for building. This rock hardens as soon as exposed to the atmos-
phere and can be laid in the walls of houses at a cost of ON K-TENTH the price of brick and
is much better building material. The quarry croppings are only on certain hills confined to
themselves while the soil n the others cannot be surpassed anywhere in the country being
a sandy chocolate loam which during rainy weather does not become muddy hence we have
fine hard ground In Grand View during the most inclement weather. Being SOUTH-EAST
oi the city on high bills overlooking tbe city end surrounding country a person hardly
needs reflect upon the great advantages this subdivision has overotherportions of the city:
being the first ridge of hills between San Antonio and the Gulf the prevailing south-east
breeze from tbe gulf which blows for nine mothsof the year has no inteiruption until it
reaches this property; end after passing over it passes on through the cemetery thence
through the city to the north-west. People coming two or three thousand miles for fresh
Cure air. should see that they get it before others have used It. The prevailing south-east
reeze carries all the smoke dust impurities and malaria in directly the oppos‘te direction
from this property. Upon tbe highest hills fine wells of pure water can be had at a depth
of thirty-five feet’ and as the drainage is away from them on all sides no seepage can con-
taminate the water. Being situated t>etween East End on the north and South Heights on
the west. the development oi any of these fine subdivisions will assist to build up the others.
Electric cars are now running through South Heights to within a fourth of a mile of Grant!
View on the west while the projected ear line through East End will run to within a quarter
of a mile ot Grand View on the north and the projected car line of the Park Terrace Com-
pany will be but a short distance fr< m Grand View on the south-west. Immediately to the
east about one mile and upon the property of the owners of Grand View Addition are the
beautiful picnic grounds known as Lees' Bend on the Salado where is now situated the finest
late in Bexar county surrounded by one of the finest forests of Giant Mossy Oaks Elms
HackberryJWa nut Pecan and other trees to be found in the state. This beautiful lake
is fed from numerous springs and lias the Salado creek coursing at all times through It.
Askany of the nimrods.school children and o <1 timers where Lees'bend and picnic grout dr
are and you will find out at once that it is only three and one half miles a little south of east
from the Postoflice. The streets in this addition are all sixty feet wide the avenues eighty
feet wide and there are no lots less than fifty feet front by a depth ot one hundred andfiO feet
TITLES.—This Grant was made by the State of Texas in 1845 to George W. Paschal and
in 1847. sold by him to Gidoon Lee. and in IbtM) by Lee sold to the present owners which show
