FRIDAY AUGUST 14 1891.
The speakership contest has been
laid away on ice to wait until the
heated term is over.
Ir is true that San Au’onio has not
permitted her municipal paper to go
to protest but San Antonto never se-
cured a $6200000 subsidy with which
to shove up her credit.
Local option if not completely
knocked out at the Tuesday elegtion
came nearer going by the board than
any other of the amendments.
“On to Velasco’’ is a cry that San
Antonio should take up and prolong
till all the valley of the Brazos shall
catch the echo.
The attenuated Sarah is coining
money in Melbourne where $2O is giv-
en for a seat in the dress circle.
Bank-Examiner Drew's defense
is an elaborate confession of judg-
ment against himself.
The cocain habit acc >rding to the
report of the hackdrivers’ council
seems to be getting away with Dallas;
something has evidently been the
matter with the capital of the Trinity
for sometime.
The democratic press are on nettles
for fear Clarkson will send a two dol-
lar greenback to the republican cam-
paign fund of lowa. Clarkson may
not be a state’s rights man but he has
a little interest in bis old state all the
same.
Quite reliable advices from Chili
represent the hostile forces there in
very much the same condition as the
duelists who were placed on opposite
sides of a yawning canyon to fight a
duel to death with the sword.
Bombarding the heavens for rain
is not as senseless a proceeding as it
looks judging from the recent results
in Midland. Science seems to git
away with faith as a successful pe-
titioner for rain.
Was Texas too lazy or the temper-
ature too sultry for a decent vote
on tbe constitutional amendments ?
Not 20 per cent of the vote of the state
was polled last Tuesday.
Ban Antonio can rake in a good
cotton mill with a wool scouring at-
tachment for $30000 stock it is the
chance of a lifetime and should not be
neglected.
The attractions at the coast catch
everything. A thousand acre tract
has been purchased near Sinton and
upon it a colony of Pennsyl-
vania Quakers will be located.
Better locate tne next colony
along the Rio Grande and let us have
peace on our borders.
BLAINE OR HARRISON.
As a political prophet the St.
Louis Globe Democrat is notan iHtat-
lible one. Like moat prophets it an-
nounces its prophecies in accordance
with its inclinations. This inclina-
tion Is not in the direction of a re-
nomination of President Harrison
and naturally the prediction is not
for that result. The Globe Demo-
crat is very enthusiastically tor
Blaine. In this it Is not alone. Tne
entire west is enthusiastically for
Blaine always has been and so is
the south. Blaine is the most popu-
lar man in the republican party to-
day. Of this fact there is no question.
Neither is there any question that the
most popular men personally are not
always the strongest men politically.
Conventions do not look alone to per-
sonal popularity and the republican
convention of 1892 will look as Plumb
says to the strongest man. The
strongest man politically not tbe
man who has the strongest personal
following. The objections to Presi-
dent Harrison are all from a personal
and not from a party standpo nt and
it will be the party as a party that is
to determine candidacy. Wnile Mr.
Harrison has no mortgage on the
nomination it is true that Mr. Blaine
will not dispute that nomination it
being all along understood that Mr.
Harrison desires it. The proposed
plan is to throw President Harrison
overboard and force the nomination
on Mr. Blaine. Can tbe convention do
this and not destroy all hope of party
victory? Will Mr. Blaine do other-
wise than in the convention of 1888
and utterly refuse to have his name
come before the convention. It may
be as the Globe democrat says that a
majority of the national committee
is opposed to Mr. Harrison’s renomi-
nation. It may not be true. Ail the
same the views ot the Globe Demo-
crat are worthy consideration and
add so much more to rhe literature of
the case. The Globe reviews the con-
tingencies of Blaine’s health apd Me
Kinley’s victory in Ohio and con-
cludes its leadAr by saying:
The matter of the nomination next
year therefore can not be condsider-
ed definitaly settled for a few months
yet. The coming November will tell
tbe story as to McKinley’s availabili-
ty and by that time perhaps thecoun
try will be officially informed as to
Blaine’s condition and intention.
If both those men are oft the track
the race is extremely likely to be a
walkover for President Harrison.
Age and other considerations have
rendered Sherman unavailable Ed-
munds and Reed are impossibilities
and nobody except a few politicians
and political “strikers” wants Alger.
In such an event Harrison is tbe on-
ly man who would be seriously
mentioned in connection with
the nomination The Presi-
dent’s chances that is to say are al-
together dependent upon Blaine and
McKinley in the manner here point-
ed out and no movement by republi-
can blisses either against Harrison or
for him can change the situation in
this respect in any degree wnatso-
ever.
The Light would give more to see
James G. Blaine elected president of
the United States than it can well
afford. It has a profound admiration
for the man. A decided personal
preference for him as the greatest of
living Americans. All this is true
and yet surveying the political field
the LiGHT.does not see its way clear
to the opinion formulated by the
Globe Democrat. At present it seems
that President Harrison will be the
nominee of the republican party to
succeed himself.
North Texas can discount South
Texas any day in the year in the per-
petration of dirty beastly crimes like
that of the Van Alstyne minister for
instance.
If the railroad commission per-
sists in its idea of a mileage rate It
will knock railroad construction in
Texas cold.
The cotton farmers of South Caro-
lina and Georgia are taking definite
steps to reduce cotton area next plant-
ing. Texas should join the proces-
sion
The saloon man will come swooping
down on the Territory under the re-
cent decision of Judge Bryan that
saloon keeping is not in violation of
the law worse than the Oklahoma
boomers did two years ago.
It is not worth while for republi-
cans to lay awake tnese hot nights
sweating over their next presidential
candidate. If they will wait until
the convention of 1892 that matter
will be satisfactorily settled.
The registration amendment has
doubtless carried in Texas and the
next legislature will rind itselt in con-
dition to give us a touch of ballot re-
form if so inclined.
The deadly coachman gets in his
work on another heiress. The Kan-
sas City Times suggests that the old
man get a bicycle for himself and
commit his girl to the tender mercies
of the street car.
Mrs. Willie Price Dow other-
wise “Jimpsy” of the Natural Gas
Company values her dude busband
at $50000; this is the least figure she
says she will take and consent to a di-
vorce. Those who kuow “Clarence”
best consider him dear at half the
money.
The heated term seemsjto have no
effect on tbe Chili liar who continues
to manufacture false reports of en-
gagements without tie least regard
to the temperature.
The Bt. Louis Republic expresses
surprise that any surprise should be
expressed over the rotten-egging of
Bam Jones as the man who talks
rotten eggs at other people must ex
pect rotten eggs from the hands of
those’who can use their fingers better
than their tongues.
