THURSDAY. AUGUST 20. 1891.
Texas is getting large enough to
breed statesmen but hitherto she
has only grown politicians.
Prince Bismarck finds that poul-
try pays better than politics but
there’s not so much fun in it.
That Omaha and Galveston rail-
road will coin money by making its
gulf terminus at Velasco.
If President Harrison’s sons had
all been daughters his pathway to a
renomination would be smoother.
The Texas sentiment is very gen-
erally condemnatory of the late fowl
proceeding at Houston.
The Iconoclast editor and the Sam
Jones style oi preacher are not built
tor every day business in this practi-
cal age.
To hear the howl of the free trade
press one would imagine America had
no free list and yet 4" per cent of
United States imports enter free.
The Natchez Democrat notifies the
Mississippi river commission that it is
dirt and not science that is wanted
on the lower levees of the Mississippi
river.
More uncertainties hang around
that Hennepin canal improvement
than any other public work in the
country with the single exception of
Galveston harbor.
The man who thinks that south-
west Texas has gone to the doge be-
cause some coast towns have over-
loaded their booms has made a big
blunder.
Fred Douglas has more white
than negro blood in his veins and has
no use for a colored man in any con-
dition in life. He is a yellow aristo-
crat of the pronounced type.
The wheat crop or Kansas and the
northwest is astonishing the most
sanguine. Authentic reports are
made of whole fields yielding 50
bushels to the acre.
Roger Q. Mills says Boies will
carry lowa. If this statement is no
nearer the truth than those made by
Mills while stumping through lowa
it will carry cold comfort to those
who read the great straddler’s
speeches in that state.
It la an open question whether the
alliance bosses are more deeply cor-
rupt or profoundly ignorant. Cer-
tain it is that' they preserve an ex-
quisite proportion between the two.
The artists’ models of Paris have
formed a trade union and entered in-
to a combination to drive out their
Italian rivals. Protection is the order
abroad as well as at home.
Pennsylvania republicans hearti-
ly endorse President Harrison’s ad-
ministration and the conduct of the
postal department under Mr. Wana-
maker. Such endorsement will be-
come very general in the next twelve
months.
The boedle sent into Ohio by the
New York importers to down McKin-
ley will prove but another Illustra-
tion of the old adage “A tool and his
money are soon parted.” It will take
more than importers' boodle to save
Ohio to the democracy.
McKinley is on the offensive
Campbell is on the defensive. In a po-
litical campaign the odds are against
the defensive aud the man who has
to forever explain is lost.
Texas has too large a democratic
majority to render any care for party
necessity. As a consequence the
whole concern of the politicians is for
personal preferment.
There are more Jews in Palestine
today than ever returned from Baby-
lon and their condition in that cap-
tivity was not more greivous than it
has been recently made in Russia.
Waco and Austin are cooling off
and there is not so much likelihood of
pistols and coffee for two as there
was.
Fort Worth Gazette says Blaine
reads the New York papers every
morning to find out how he feels. If
by any accident Blaine should learn
what the Gazette’s surgeon says of
him he will probably turn his face to
the wall and die.
The British minister at Washing-
ton is taking a hand in the Chinese
dish and claiming Canadian citizen-
ship for the celestials smuggled
across the Niagara border. Canadian
John must think Uncle Sam is a
softy.
The cure of yellow fever in a polar
chamoer temperature 40 3 is success-
full effected in hospital at Santiago
de Cuba. Frost kills the germs nat-
urally applied and why should not
the artificial cold be fully as effective?
Let Vera Cruz try it oa.
Weaver of lowa and Pfeffer and
Simpson of Kansas seem to have
been foreordained to bring the third
party into disrepute. It is needless
to say they are making their calling
and electiou sure.
Texas is too firmly fixed on the
rock of prosperity for any fool legisla-
tion to undermine her but the last
democratic body of lawgivers gave
her a mighty bard shaking up.
The alien laud law made sixty-five
aliens American citizens by declara-
tion of intention at Hallettsville in
one day last week. That law is no
slouch for every one of these men had
monied interests at stake.
Kansas will reduce her farm mort-
gages more than $10000000 as the
result ef this years crops and prices.
Instead of bleeding Kansas it will
soon be in order to write blooming
Kansas.
The pious and the puipit can al-
ways muster a kick for the Louisiana
Lottery but the gambling through
the agencies of that lottery compared
to the crime of gambling in the ne-
cessaries of life is as a very little nig-
ger to a very dark night.
Washburn the big Minneapolis
miller after an extensive tour to the
grain districts of Europe and Russia
expresses the opinion that there will
be a foreign demand for the 200.000Ok)
surplus bushels of wheat produced by
America this year.
Clarkson is not humping himself
for Alger or any other man. As head of
the republican executive committee
he is at work getting the republican
forces in order for the great advance
upon the democracy in 1892. The
selection of the commauder in chief
will be made later.
Bismarck says Germany has made
several mistakes aud names three of
them. He does not enumerate the
mistake that was made when he was
retired from the chancellorship among
the rest but he no doubt Includes it
mentally.
The general secretary of the
American section of the Theosophlc
Society rushes into print to inform
the uninitiated that Lady Caithness
has not been elected to succeed the
late Madame Blavatsky for the sim-
ple reason that the late Madame had
attained to such a divine height of
theosophlc wisdom that she forever
remains unapproachable in her
sphere and it wotfld be a mortal pre-
sumption to elect a successor.
If there are no more failures in the
South American republics compell-
ing English investors to sell their
American securities in order to cover
the situation gold will be flowing
from Europe to America in a satisfac-
tory stream within the next 30 days.
Corpus Christi council closes
aud signs contract for water works:
supply not lees than 250000 gallons
daily. Supply will be sought through
wells and borings for'eameare to com-
mence by September 20lh. A good
water supply means millions to the
Cliff city aud the Light wishes the
Corpus Christians every success in
their endeavor.
Is the Corpus Caller so insanely
ealouß of the reputation of the “City
that sits by the Sea” that it cannot
accept a compliment to that beautiful
town without imagining a covert
sneer is hid behind the compliment?
Shame on you! The Light sees the
good there is in Corpus and honestly
says so. This cannot detract from
advantages that San Antonio
posesses. Don’t be so everlastingly
narrow and you will not stumble
over obstructions where there are
none.
New York Herald claims that it
has authentic information of Harri-
son’s deiaration that be will not be a
candidate before the next republican
national convention and that Quay
and Elkins have been put in posses-
sion of this fact to use at such time in
the future as may be deemed best.
Dollars to doughnuts aud no takers
that the Herald’s imagination gets
away with its facts. When Mr. Har-
rison determines to withdraw from
the field as a presidential candidate
he will let the country know it in
such a way that there will be no mis-
take about it.
The American Institute fair which
holds its 16th annual exhibition in
New York City next month promises
to be (he most interesting of the series
yet held. The extensive preparations
made for the World's Columbian ex-
hibition at Chicago have stimulated
public interest in all Industrial and
commercial exhibitions. The Amer-
ican Institute remains open two full
months beginning September 80th
and the list of entries Is already
large.
SCIENTIFIC' WAIFS.
A peculiar glossy and transparent
cloth is made from the fiber of nettles
which is used among other things for
belting of machinery aud it is claim-
ed to have double the strength of
leather.
Acilico printing machine has been
invented in this country the rovelty
of which is that the cloth may be
printed on one side in eight colors or
on both sides with four colors each.
A medicament more powerful than
quinine in counteracting fevers is
said to have been discovered in Mex-
ico. It is a plant called the pompo
lanot root of which contains a sub-
stance analogous to quinine.
Red stockings are generally color-
ed from matters of aniline which con-
tain large quantities of antimoniac
products. When perspiring this
matter becomes soluble enters the
pores of the skin and produces a vio-
lent rash.
