MONDAY. SEPTEMBER 14 1891
The democracy find it very easy
work criticising the nominations that
President Harrison does not make.
The Chili factions have all united
against the Balmacedans but the
union will not be so apparent when
it comes to a division of the spoils and
a distribution of the offices.
Houston advices indicate that there
is no bottom to the cotton picker’s
league. Probably not. Supply and
demand is seldom regulated that
way.
The Boerne Post says Elkins is in
it. In as a candidate out as the pres-
idential nominee. The Post is very
dead timber on a republican appoint-
ment.
In the death ot President Grevy
France has lost one of her purest and
wisest statesmen and a true republi-
can as well.
That {20000000 pork market open-
ed up by the republican administra-
tion at Washington is a good argu-
ment for the continuation ot the
present party in power.
Balmacf.da keeps a close grip on
himself. His whereabouts like the
burial of Moses is involved In mys-
tery.
Governor Hill’s declaration for
•free trade was loudly cheered at Buf-
falo. on account of the eight hour ar-
gument which he advanced. David
B. he. always lays for Grover C
The Dallas Times-Herald predicts
that Hill will this year lead the New
York democrats to another such
victory as was achieved over Folger.
Can't do it.
A big corn crop means a big hog
crop in this country and the opening
of the German and Danish markets
to American pork means increased
demand and better prices.
Both Holland Patent and Buffalo
one the home of Cleveland and the oth-
er the scene ot his earliest political tri-
umphs have declared for Hill. His
•‘far away Mo-es” friends will have
to give him up.
The weather and crop reports sent
out by the Texas bureau place cotton
on September 10th about the same as
last year. Press reports show cotton
fully 20 percent below last year’s
conditions.
After this week President Harri-
son will be found at the national cap-
ital. Press of business has compelled
him to leave the seaside two weeks
earlier than was originally intended.
Ban Antonio sincerely sympa-
thizes with Corpus Christi in her loss
of the Miramar Hotel and expresses
her sympathy through the Light.
The “Monthly Mail” of the Icono-
clast for September is loaded with
dynamite.
Farming with tne mouth is not as
acceptable to the rank and file of the
alliance as it was a year ago.
The democratic party is c miug to
understand that it cannot understand
the relations of President Harrison
and Secretary Blaine. It is not
necessary that they should.
Sam Jones’ opinions ou railroads
seem to be more generally eudorstd
than his sermons.
You can go entirely around the
world now in six weeks but wbat
good will it do you?
Foster’s grip on the bulb of the
thermometer shows no signs ot
weake ring.
Ignatius Donnelly is doing all
he aid lowa republicans; he is
slumping for the third party.
The Texas cotton gin knocks out
the kerosene can as a starter of fires.
Cotton is still king.
The Beeville Bee continues to en-
joy tlie patronage which it deserves
and which it has well earned by a
close and careful attention to tie
wants of its patrons.
Kansas is getting her winter
wheat ground ready in great shape.
Another mortgage knocking harvest
and Pfeffer will have no beard left.
Judge McCabe is again under ar-
rest and there will besheol to pay in
Hidalgo county.
The vacant places on the interstate
commission have not been filled and
Texas has not been asked to contrib-
ute to the vacancies. If she Is so
asked Maxey’s chances are considered
better than those of Reagan.
The chairmanship of the interstate
commission should go to some one
who is not an ingrain enemy to the
railways.
The principal objection to the tree
entry of the American hog into Ger-
many comes from the free traders
who cannot forgive the protectionists
for removing the embargo.
It may be unfortunate that all wills
bequeathing and disposing ot large
sums of money are contested but it
would be more unfortunate were such
a will as that of Mrs. Searles Hopkins
permitted to stand.
English thought and opinion
crystalizes into the conviction that it
is useless to treat China with len-
iency as anything except severely is
lost upon the Celestials. Better re-
build their wall and let them alone.
The war and navy departments at
Washington have beeu asked to ap-
point a competent engineer each to
examine and pronounce upon the
solidity of the exposition buildings
being erected in Chicago.
The Aransas Harbor people find
difficulty in collecting installment
payments on their real estate.JThe
promises made as to work on the
Pass not having been met.
Thk Mormon missionary is again
proselyting in rural England and is
very liable to get himself Into trouble.
The multiple marriage is not in favor
there.
The Corpus Caller is informed that
the Light always tells the truth.
That 45 percent ot the September 4 1-2
per cents will be redeemed when-
ever presented. Secretary Foster nas
so notified the holders and what he
says goes unless he has differently

The Boerne Poet knows that Steve
Elkinswill be secretary of war the
Galveston Tribune knows that it will
be Joe Hawley. The president does
not know as yet who it will be and is
not likely to learn from his Texas
advisors.
While Austin is still agonizing
over that {35000 for extention to
Llano of which not quite half is
pledged San Antonio should step in
and secure the extension so much de-
sired by Llano. Beneficial as this
connection will be to Llano it will be
doubly so to San Antonio.
Northwestern millers are prepar-
ing to ship flour to Cuba in packages
representing Spanish weights. The
demand seems to be for sacks of 200
Spanish pouuds eacti. American
shippers must learn to put up goods
in packages familiar to the trade sup-
plied in the Central and South Amer-
cas In order to satisfy that commerce.
Germany has made a study of this
thing and finds that it pays immeus-
!y in securing trade.
Thomas Hughes of Baltimore re
turned from all around-the-world
trip spent some time in Italy where
he found no end of Americans and
came to the conclusion that the New
Orleans affair did not figure much in
Italy anyway. Speaking of the
Italian feeling on that affair Mr.
Hughes says:
“Those who were sufficiently in-
formed to discuss it cared absolutely
nothing as to the result of it. So tar
as there seemed to be any public
opinion upon the subjectthere wasau
utter lack of sympathy for those
who were killed. In the estimation
of those with whom I talked the
character which those killed bore in
Italy was sufficient to condemn them.
They were of a type known only too
well in Italy. But public opinion as
we understand It does not exist in
Italy. In Italy few persons read the
newspapers. The conditions ot life
there are such that most per-
sons have their attention absorbed
in providing for their daily susten-
ance and they neither have the in-
clination nor the time to read news-
papers. Newsboys are found in the
streets in scarcely any Italian city
except Rome and there only to a
most limited extent. I was told
generally that the expression in
the Italian newspapers at the
time of the New Orleans troubles
were not those of the people at large
who entertained any opinion upon
the subject but were rather the
reflected views and wishes of Italian
politicians.”
The interstate commerce regula-
tions know no state lines and the
separate coach business is entirely a
state affair. This is the distinction
and it sometimes makes a difference.
