ECHOES FROM WEST END
It is suggested that the pelican men-
tioned some davs ago in the Light be-
longed to the Widow Mcree. for after its
departure and short absence it returned
with a companion both are getting tame.
The nearest thing to perpetual motion
—far ahead of any Keely motor—is the
crank of the mistuned hand organ just
outside West End reservation.

The advent of Col. Boone and his five
liberated lions before the American public
is the latest circus sensation. These lions
are all set free in the circus ring and are
made to do every act that dogs and horses
have been trained to perform—the pecu-
liar novelty of the performance is in the
entire freedom given the lions—hitherto
all exhibitionsof trained lions have been
inside a cage and never before have lions
been seen running around and performing
free from all restraint in a circus ring.
Isaac A. Van Amburgh and Herr
Driesbach were the most famous lion
trainers ever seen in this country until
Col. Boone arrived. The two first named
died years ago. and are only remembered
by those who have passed the half centu-
ry mile stone. A performer of more re-
cent times was Andrew Pierce who
ranked next to Van Amburgh in lion
training. Frank Lawson was at one time
the champion in this line. Col Thomas
Davis who was nearly cut to death in a
den of lions in Chicago was also famous
for his achievements in lion training. A
famous lion known to older circus men
by the name of “Old Parker.” and who
died at Central Park several years ago.
enjoyed the reputation of having killed
four men.
Col. Boone’s method of taming and train-
ing lions is entirely different from the old
time customs. He never cuts their claws
burns their mouth uses heated irons or
any of the old-fashioned methods. He
educates the brutes by patience and kind-
ness and by so doing is enabled to take
them from their cages and perform them
in the circus ring or anywhere else.
The Colonel and his liberated lions will
be seen in the Adam Forepaugh Shows
which are to exhibit here on Monday
October 19.

“Sport McAllister.”
Grand Opera House was almostcrowded
with an appreciative audience last night
to welcome Bobby Gaylor again to San
Antonio.
His play “Sport McAllister one of the
400” is very amusing as a farcical satire
on Gotham’s bon ton but as a play will
not rank high. It depends on specialties
of the higher class and different styles of
dancing from a clog to the Carmencita
were given.
Several good vocal selections were given
and a first-class quartette of male voices
was the strongest hit of the piece. A very
pretty drill at anus was also given
by this versatile quartette. The honors
were divided pretty equally between Bob-
bv Gaylor as “Sport;” J. P. Carroll as
‘McGinty;’’ Charles W. Young as
“Chauncey Rvskes” and Miss Georgia
Parker as “Tilda.” the maid.
The piece was put on to create laugh-
ter not to interest the drama loving pub-
lic. and laughter is all there is in it.
