THE WOMEN OPTOKKKI.
There Are Few Beauties Among
Them and Their Dress Is
Very Untidy.
Philadelphia Record.
A flue chance to see the Turkish
people and most particularly tho wo-
men is to go on Friday afternoon to
the Sweet Waters rtweetmeans simp-
ly fresh. Two of tneae favorite spots
exist one on the Asian and une
ou the European side. We iound it
a pleasant drive to the latter of near -
ly au hour through the city and
over the barren country hills. At
the end was a green valley through
which flowed the upper waters of the
Golden Horn. Along the bank wire
sy.:a n >es a id weeping willows just
coming into leaf. Over the meadows
blossomed forget-me-nots tnd the tail
snow-drops. Ou mats stretched by
the water’s edge reclined veiled wi-
men.
Their shoes were thrown oft’ and
they lounged upon piles of cushions
in at itt.de> as unconeerne • a ifiu the
d pt'.is of their secluden homes.
Children played around. Gypsies
wandered here and there singing
gay songs bagging and selling flow-
ers; men with water jars were every-
where clinking glasses to announce
meir approach. 80 were the candy
merchants everywhere and the fancy
bread merchants and the orauge mer-
chants. bines of carriages passed
slowly bacK aud forth in which were
the flowers of the harems too care-
ful of themselves to take their plea-
sure outside. We looked eagerly for
beauties and iu rare cases were not
disappointed but we must confess
that the majority ot these tar-famed
Turkish dames were unattractive.
There were handsome dresses sal-
mon pink and light blue seeming to
be the favorite colors with elegant
embroidery. The veils of white
muslin were becoming as they are
pictured. But the lovely eyes the
alabaster complexion the numberless
charms so often described were con-
picuous by their absence. Many car-
riages contained gentlemen often
offhersin uniform. Tney liKe Our-
selves all appeared interested in the
ladies carriages.
This same impression we carried
with us throughout our‘stay in Con-
stantinople. We constantly saw wo
men upon the streets for they go
out as freely as women anywhere
bmwealmod never saw a pretty
one. Whether they are closely
guarded ai d never allowed outside
the harem while the plain ones are
allowed to follow their own sweet
will we may only conjecture. We
frequently saw women 111 companies
together the gay colors of their outer
garments making a flower garden
etfett iu the street. A women when
she goes out puts a thin veil oyer her
face and then draws about her the
outer covering which is to hide
her from the world. This is-
gathered somewhere in tho mid
die and fastened about th»
waist the lower part falling straight
to the ankles: the upper half is then
held up over the head drawn across
the temples and pinned on each side
the veil leaving the arms free to
hold the wing like parts left around
the body. She almost invari able
carries a patasol matcuing or har-
monizing with the shawl. Thia we
surmised was to hold down over the
face when the veil proved iu surtleien t
protection tor there was often no ex
cuse of sun or rain. There is nothing
pretty in this get up beyond tho silk
of the shawl. The shoes are general-
ly slipshod aud the ankles ugly. The
underskirts are all drawn up around
tier and pinned bulging out the
shawl awkwardly.
