New York Not Democratic.
The assertion floating around the
press credited to a New York paper
that “New York has been a reliably
Democratic State for about twenty
years” requires a good deal of quali-
fication before it can be accepted as a
truthful statement. In the election
lor governor in the past twenty
years to be sure the republi-
cans have curried tbe state
twice only and in one of those
years 1879 the victory was due to a
split in the democratic column. So
far as regards contests for state offi-
cers therefore the democrats have
had the best or tbe game for over half
a generation But the canvasses for
president tell a different story. Jn
national campaigns New York was
one of the original republican states
giving a majority of 80000 to
Fremont in 1856 and one of
50010 to Lincoln in 1860. It also
went republican in 1864. It in 1868
that the state first broke to tbe de-
mocracy in a presidential year and it
has alternated between the two big
parties since dividing its favors
equally between them. In the past
six national canvasses the republi-
cans have carried the state three
times and the democrats three but
the aggregate majorities for the
republicans in those elections have
been much greater than for tbe demo
crate.
A glance at tbe figures of republi-
can and democratic majorities in New
York in recent presidential elections
will convince any reasonable person
that the chances are in favor of tbe
republicans in that state whenever
tbe full republican vote can be drawn
out. Yu 1884 despite the aid given
the democrats by Burchard the pro
hibitionists and the old anti-
Blaine republicans the democrat-
ic lead was ouly 1047 in the
state while the republicans in 1888
carried it for President by a majority
of 13000. If the entire vote ot the
state be brought to the polls tnis year
the candidate of the party will win
The fact that it is seldom brought out
except in presidential years accounts
for the frequent defeats for the repub-
licans in state canvasses. It is a fact
which has often been noted and com-
mented upon that in the Northern
States when there is a lack of interest
for any cause ia a campaign and
when the vote is light the Republi-
cans usually suffer more than the
Democrats. In republican commun-
ities it seems to require an unusually
powerful incentive to send all the
voters to the ballot box and such a
stimulus seldom comes except in Pre-
sidenrial years. The Republicans of
New York ought to feel sufficiently
interested in the result to turn out in
full force this year and if they do

An Irishman Whipped by a China-
man.
From the New York Sun.
Wah Sing of 41 Park street is an
inoffensive looking little Cbinauiau
who came from Minnesota about a
I year ago to break up the fan tan joints
iin the Sixth Ward. He tiad several
। of them raided by the police and as
» result was confined in the House of
Detention for nearly six weeks as
a witness. When lie was released
the friends of the gamblers got at
him one night and tried to lynch him.
Detectives Pi ice and Schirmer of the
Elizabeth Street Station rescued the
Chinaman and he moved over to
Brooklyn.
The ot her day Wah came back to
the city and opened a grocery store
at 41 Park street. He went to live at
4 Dover street. An Irish woman
whose Chinese husband is a well
known gambler and who also lives
at 4 Dover street heard that Wah
Sing was In the house andon Thurs-
day night when he was asleep she
thurst the nozzle of a hose over the
transom and turned on the water.
When he opened the door to see what
was tbe matter she belabored him
over the head with a saucepan.
Yesterday morning Slog called at
the Tombs police Court for a warrant
for her arrest and was returning to
his place ot business when he was
assaulted by John O’ Keefe of 34 Oak
street Hing let his right shoot out
and caught O’ Keefe under the
chin and he fell like a log. The little
fellow then jumped on his antagonist
and thrashed him.
Policeman Downing arrested the
fighters. At the Tombs Police Court
Justice O’ Relily had not yet arrived
and Clerk McCowan asked what was
the matter.
“Him makee fool of me” said
Sing-
“Yer er bloody haythin loiar retor-
ted O’ Keefe.
“Did you hit this man?” asked the
clerk turning to the Chinaman.
“ Yes melickee him. Him no good:
him stuff. Me good Chinaman. I
hard tighter.
“O’let me get at the haythin let
me at him groaned O’ Keefe. Ter
think that an Irishman took a blow
from a Chinaman!
“O’ Keefe” said tbe clerk “do
yon mean to say that you an Irish
man and a Fourth Ward Irishman
at that let a Chinaman whip you?
“He can never do me even. Put us 1
in the box together and I’ll punch
the yaller head off him.
“Me go in box with him; me no
’flaid. Me lick him once me lick
again” said Sing all smiles.
“Oh let me at him let me at him!”
began O Keefe but the clerk Inter-
rupted him. '
“O’ Keefe” he said. If Justice Div-
ver sits this afternoon and he hears
that you a Fourth Ward Irishman
let a Chinaman lick you he’ll send
yon up for life.”
“Oh fjord! oh Lord!” groaned
O’ Kee’e.
But- Justice Divver didn’t sit. Jus-
tice O’R»i Ily w-»g on hand and he
fined O'Keefe|o.
