made a tool. I was grieved and thong
1 deserve*! some compensation I deter-
mined therftore to clear up the mystery
if ide before 1 left Malden but this
1 knew would require strategy So 1 sat
down in the parlor and thought it over
for a while and then going to the office
sent up my card to Miss Ormsby.

I now had her tchcrc I wanted her.
Following it closely 1 arrived at her
door in time to hear her say that she
could see no one but before she could
finish her excuses 1 stepped into her
private parlor saying that I was here on
busmen and seeing by the register that
she was here also and alone 1 had come
to see if 1 could be of any service to her.
“None whatever; thanks." she replied
very coldly “and you will find that if
you look again Mr. Cummings that my
name is not on the register. Then she
waited for me to leave the room.
1 bit my lip with vexation that 1
should have made so stupid a blunder. 1
might have known that she would never
havesigned herown name to the register
1 had no intention of being driven away
however and so continued the conversa-
tion by saying 1 should like to report to
her concerning the errand she had given
me to do that afternoon.
“Is it necessary?" she inquired in the
same icy tone.
“Why the fact is." 1 said “that I am
rather ashamed to confess that 1 forgot
to deliver the ribbon”— 1 paused for
she looked as angry and disappointed as
I have ever seen a human being appear;
but with it all there was not a trace of
pity for the girl or thankfulness at her
escape only rage at the failure of her
own plans.
“Is that the way you generally exe-
cute your commissions?” she said at last
'with a sneer
“Excuseme"l continued "you looked
so angry that 1 did not finish my sen-
tence. I was going to say that 1 forgot
to deliver the ribbon for nearly an hour
after you it to me."
“Well? she said; oul 1 could see she
was intensely interested.
“1 met a friend of mine down town
and we get to talking and so tiie time
passed. It was Mr. Frank Holden. Do
you know him?”
Slie answered “No" but 1 knew that
she meant yes. “It was curious” I went
on “but he was taking some ribbon to
Jordan & Marsh’s also." 1 paused for a
minute in astonishment for this had
been the wildest sort of a guess on my
part and yet 1 could see from her invol-
untary start that 1 had unwittingly hit
upon the truth; then 1 proceeded. “Just
'beforb we arrived at the store however
another friend stopped him to talk and
1 hurried on to do your errand and left
him.” She looked immensely relieved.
My fii-st bit of fiction had succeeded so
well that 1 determined to try again so 1
said as innocently as 1 could “That was
not all. Miss Ormsby for the girl that 1
gave the ribbon to fainted." She made
no direct reply to this but muttered.
“The little tool."
"What do you think of that?" 1 asked
"1 think." she said “that your conduct
is very ungentlemauly and that you are
saying these things to me for some pur-
pose. What do you mean? Either tell
me at once or be kind enough to leave
the room."
"I mean Mias Ormsby" I replied
“that 1 know why you sent the purple
ribbon; that I have followed you every-
where that you have been tonight; that
the body of Miss Mason has been found
and that 1 have seen it; finally I mean
that 1 have it in my power to have you
arrested for murder.”
For a minute or two she did not say a
word but stood looking at me and biting
her lips; otherwise she was perfectly
calm and presently said in a hard dry
voice that told of suppressed feeling:
“You make bold assertions Mr. Cum-
mings. Can you prove them?"
"Yes.” 1 replied producing an en-
velop.? I had prepared for this occasion
“here is a letter 1 found on her body
charging you with the deed and with
the proof I already have it would serve
as conclusive evidence."
"Has any one else seen tills letter?"
“No one oat my- it I found it as 1
have jun said."
