The day of election is near at hand
yet there is no candidate for alderman
at large in the field.
Is it possible that office holding in
San Antonio has lost all its charms
and that the office of aiderman at
large must go a begging?
What has become of the patriotism
that was wont tolnilame the breasts
of the people whenever an office was
dangled before their eyes?
The rumor Is that the admiuistra
tlon candidate has been picked out
that he is now engaged in a still
hunt for votes.
There is a quiet talk of selecting
some man who would make a first
class mayor and running him for ai-
derman to test his strength with the
peopleand draw attention to him.
No one is willing to undergo mar-
tyrdom for the sake of an experiment.
Possibly were a pressure brought
to bear on him and a large dose of
taffy administered to him Mr.
Alphabet Smith might box up his
modesty and agree to make the race.
Formerly when an election was on
hand the bushes were alive with
candidates every morning the cry
was “still they come” —but now
the cry is * my kingdom tor a candi-
date for alderman at large.
We must have a race of some sort
to get up a breeze of excitement and
put an end to the epidemic of long
faces now prevailing.
The real estate agents are suffering
from a severe drouth in the way of
business.
There is too great a number of them
for the business to be done and they
will either have to “bunch up” seek
other channels of business or go in
quest of new pastures.
San Antonio wants a steady and
substantial growth and does not
w ! sb or need to trick or delude
strangers into buying real estate
by any fictitious and manufactured
boom for the benefit of speculators la
city lots out in the country.
The indictment of Constable Marti-
nez caused a ripple of surprise and
excitement as he is quite popular.
Really it begins to look as though
Texas courts are bound to clash and
collide.
A law should be passed to stop all
such unseemly conflicts of authority.
Landmarks and bouys should be
erected to point out the channels they
shall run in.
In a civil suit instituted in the 45th
District court asking for a writ of
sequestration Judge King appears to
be vested with the power to order it
to be issued.
There is probably no law on the
statute book either exempting the
grand jury from a writ of sequestra-
tion or making it criminal to grant
such a writ at the suit of a citizen.
No officer from the governor down
to constable is placed above the laws
of the state. Not one of them enjoys
any such exemption.
Mayor Callaghan has yet to learn
that tact is a virtue—that “discretion
is the better part of valor” and while
“speech is silver silence is golden.”
He “put his foot into it” when he
“shot oft his mouth” in Judge Noon-
an's court last Wednesday.
He has not sufficient command of
his temper to admit of his speaking
in a matter wherein his feelings are
enlisted.
In such a case he resembles a ship
whose rudder has been broken. It
can’t be steered.
He has many good points—he is a
good friend and a good hater—most
positive men are of that temperament
and it is a pity he should have placed
himself in a false position.
The grand jury has an undisputed
right to examine the books of any
city or county officer though it ought
not to keep them for an unreasonable
time.
