A HOKKID CRIME.
She Poured Coal Oil on Her Hus-
band and Burned Him Up.
One of the most atrocious murders
in the annals of Cook county. Ills. is
recalled by a dispatch from Spring-
field announcing that Gov. Fifer has
pardonded Lena Schreiner a ten year
convict.
It will be remembered that along in
June 1888 the police of Chicago were
called to the home of Matthias Schrei-
ner a German who was writhing
upon the floor in theugontesot death.
His clothing had been saturated with
coal oil and some one bad ignited the
clothing. Schreiner died after terri-
ble suffering and his wife Lena a
woman but twenty years old was
arrested charged with the murder of
her husband. She confessed to
having poured the oil up on him aud
afterward setting fire to him; but
claimed that lie was a drunkard and
had the an pleasant habit of coming
home and beating her. This he had
done just previous to the oil scene.
“I just wanted to give him a good
scare so be would quit drinking”
said Mrs. Schreiner.
But the public viewed it as a most
terrible crime and Lena was indicted
oy the grand jury June 25 18 8 and
tried aud convicted for murder before
Judge ruthill who sentenced her to
Joliet for ten years Sept. 8 1888
The woman bad not Deen in prison
long before her friends began to cir
eulato a petition for her release
Burgomaster Schaaek who was one
of theeffieers most prominent in the
prosecution favored the pardon it is
said and this emboldened the friends
to such an extent that they sought
Judge l uthill and obtained bis signa
ture to the petition. Assistant
State Attorney Neeleyhwo conducted
the prosecution slsosigned the docu-
niei t as did Judge Lons'eneeker and
others of prominence. This petition
set forth tne unhappy domestic rela
tions between Lena and het busband
and declared that she did In no way
contemplate murder when she poured
the oil on the drunken man and then
ignited it. Gov. Fifer accepted this
idea it seems for he gave Lena her
liberty.

The Little Thing That Annoyed

Convert.
R. B.Morris of Atchison is best
known in the state of Kansas as an
enthusiastic democrat At home be
is also an enthusiastic high church
Episcopalian. He is not a communi
cant but he is a great hand to make
converts to the faith.
The story is told that he once under-
took to snatch a brand from the burn-
ing and make an Episcopalian of
him. The friend was willing and
one bright Sabbath mornii g the two
were promptly in Mr. Morris” pew
That day Mr. Morris taught bis
friend when to sit and when to stand
The next Sunday he was taught how
to respond from the book.
The third Sunday Mr. Morris con-
sidered his dioiple capable of going it
alone aud giving him a book told
him to turn to the proper page aud go
ahead. But the particular page was
missing from the book and the con-
vert leaned over aud responded from
Mr. Morris’ book. It annoyed Mr.
Morris and finally after pronoun-
cing the word" “We beseech you to
hear us O Lord” in deep resonat e

FROM KAOS TO RICHES.
How a Hotel Dish-Carrier Turned
Out To Be a Wealthy Count.
A dish carrier at the Palace hotel
in San Francisco has been trans
formed into a real Italian count all
in a lew brief hours. Fiction could
not be more strange than are the
facts surrounding his singular eleva-
tion to the nobility
Count Carlo Gatti a prominent silk
merchant at Yokohama whose homo
was in Rome Italy before he went
to Japan arrived in San Francisco
on the Gaelic a few mornings since
and registered at the California hotel.
During an interview Count Gatti re-
marked that he came to America
partly because he hsd reason to be
lieve that bis nephew w ho bad dis-
appeared from Italy was somewhere
in the United States. This nephew’s
name he said was DominicoZoudada
He described him as about 31 years
old and of medium sire. The inter-
view was printed and so was the
description of the nephew.
About eight mouths ago the stew-
ard at the Palace hotel had occasion
to advertise for waiters’ help. Among
the men who answered the advertise-
ment was a young Italian who was
very ragged apparently very poor
and utterly unable to speak the Eng-
lish language. He talked very little
wiih the other ’buses or the waiters.
What be did say was that be had
worked in Kansas City and that his
name was Dominico
Two days after Count Gatti’s arri-
val John Kelly the assistant head
waiter at the Palace was reading a
newspaper when the item about the
count at the California hotel caught
his eye.
“Dominico Dominico” he said to
himself. “I am sure I have heard
such a name. Sure enough! It’s
one of the ’buses.”
The ragged carrier of dishes was
called aud told what the paper said.
“My uncle!” he cried. “It’s my
uncle. He has been In Japan for
years ”
Kelly acted as intermediary and
brought about a meeting between
uncle and nephew. Count Gatti was
overjoyed on seeing the young man.
He informed him that his pre«ence
in Italy was demanded and told him
that while he had been in Ann rica
his father bad died aud be had in-
herited the estate and the title. Ou
hearing this the young- man was
nearly overcome. He explained that
he rau away from bis borne in Rome
because be could not agree with b’s
relatives. In this country be bad
undergone all sorts of misfortuuis
aud hardships and been brought
many times to the verge ol starve
tion.
The young man went back to the
Palace hotel w ith a boutonniere that
cost more than his overcoat. He
said good-by to his old friends the
waiters and shook every other “om-
nibus” by the band promising that
tbey would all get a more substantial
token of his regard before many
months were gone
The two counts uncle and nephew
left for New York on the overland
train the same evening. Kelly has
a present of value promised to him
for Dominico insists on recognising
the man who brought about the sud-
den change from ’bus to count.
