WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 231891
Texas is not rushing the mourners
in the endeavor to furnish funds for
her Chicago exhibit and the proces-
sion drags painfully.
Velasco is successfully engaging
in deep water business the artesian
well is a gusher and the depth upon
the bar increases.
Mills is not improving in health
and there is no improvement in the
temper and utterances of some of his
fool friends.
Private Dalzell is ambitions to
succeed Quay in the United States
senate. If Private Dalzell can cut no
better figure in Washington than
Corporal Tanner did he had better
stay at home.
Extra work in regular legislative
sessions mem tiers paid by the job
and not by the day would obviate
the necessity of regular work in extra
sessions. The Texas misfits can paste
this in the'r baf.
Present ind cations are ail favora-
ble to an r-uy money market and
plenty of the circulating medium
within the next ninety days. Ran
Antonio will be ready to scatter her
chare when the real estate races
open.
Washington must be an invalid’s
camp judging from the reports re-
ceived from there of the number of
congressmen under medical treat
mant. The physical disabilities of la
grippe seem to overshadow the abili-
ty to get the grip political.
Noone but a gull believes that or-
ders have been received from Wash-
ington for the conduct nf the cam-
paign in Louisiana. The canard will
have the effect of firing the democrat-
ic heart however and this is all that
it was intended to do.
Argentine Republic gives the re*
volution the go by and saws wood in-
dustriously. The result is seen In
the most magnificent crops ever har-
vested in that country. Tne outcome
will be speedy deliverance from the
financial straits into which that coun-
try has been crowded of late.
Hill s right to take ills eeat in the
United States senate after so loug a
period lias elapsed since his election
without bis signifying his acceptance
of the position will be quertioned.
His colleagues will be anxious to
know what right if any a senator
has to hold office as state governor
after his election to the senate with-
out forfeiting his right to the latter.
Chairman Clarkson of the na-
tional republican committee express-
es himself strongly in favor of the
abandonment of the prohibition fool-
ishness by the republicans of lowa.
He is of the opinion that his party
never can recover the ground they
have lost in that state until they dis-
card prohibition. Clarkson’s view is
a sensible one and if lowa republi-
cans are wise they will adopt it.
The democratic correspondents at
the national capital ata either born
fools or imagine that all their readers
are non compos mentis. They repre-
sent Blaine and Harrison as devoured
by mutual jealousy hatred and a
burning desire for revenge while at
the same time they are arranging to
share the burdens of government with
either one in the presidential chair
the other dancing attendance as sec-
retary of state just as the voice of the
republican convention at Minneapolis
may pronounce. It is not iu
accordance with human nature
that such an arrangement should
be made between enemies particu-
larly as these same correspondents
persist in assuring the country that
Biaiuecau have the nomiuatlou at any
time he says so. If Blaine hates Har-
rison so bitterly and unforglvingly
why should be Lold back from de-
claring himself a presidential candi-
date and thus forever disappoint the
aspirations of Mr. Harrison to succeed
himself? If Harrison has such an in-
tense and bitter antagonism to
Mr. Blaine why does he not ask
his resignation as secretary of
state and thus wound Blaine in his
tenderest feeliug and prevent the ac-
complishment of the great work of
reciprocity with foreign peoples upou
which Blaine has set hie heart? The
spectacle of two bitter enemies rivals
for the same official position amica-
bly working together to increase each
the prestige of the other is an anomo-
ly aud the fiction is worthy that
modern lunatic asylum a democratic
correspondent’s braiu.
Blaine is accredited with the re-
sponsibility of Elkins’ appointment
as war secretary. It is an accrediting
that is somewhat discrediting.
If as reported Elkius was appoint-
ed at Blaine’s request it shows how
influential the great secretary of state
is in the presidential councils.
No ONE discredits Elkins’ ability.
The criticism is Dot upou his brains
but upon his previous political
methods which have not commended
him to public confidence.
The Galveston News is death on
simile. It speaks of baiting an
elephant with a sop. It will now be
in order for it to sop au elephant
with batt.
The politician’s smile aud hand-
shake like that of the hustler at the
door of a second baud clothing store
does not go beyond the threshold. It
is all on the outside.
Samples of tobacco grown at La-
redo show that section admirably
adapted to the growth of a very su-
perior article. There is mouey in a
good tobacco field.
The democracy is howling for a
western presidenteal candidate.
Salvation will not come to the demo-
cracy out of the west. There are cer-
tain eastern states that they must
carry or go to the wall. It is a
groundhog case.
Money is dirt cheap in New York
and the market is glutted so say the
reports from that money center.
This will be the case in all themoney
centers of the great grain producing
states as soon as returns from mov-
ing crops are received.
The republic ins of Louisiana seem
determined to follow the example of
their democratic brethren and play
the role of Kilkenny cats in their own
back yards. If they had good horse
sense they would win their fight first
and quarrel over tiie spoils after-
waid.
“Before you skin your coou catch
him” is an adage that applies with
great aptitude to the Louisiana re-
publhms in this juncture of party
affairs. They could wiu aud catch
the coon by united effort but prefer
nursing old grudges.
The Houston Daily Herald demo-
cratic though it be has apparently
little reverence for the democratic
powers that be. In its Saturday is-
sue it says concerning the chief
executive of Texas :
“A creator who can manufacture a
creature greater than hiuself is in-
deed a pitiable object. J. Stevens
Hogg can make a United States sen-
ator but he can’t get there himself.”
The democratic journalist who has
no more respect than this for his par-
ty governor must either be a Jew or
have been badly squeezed in a bog
deal.
The New Orleaus Dally Item pub-
lishes the portraits of McEnery aud
Wickliffe as the sure enough gover-
nor and lieutenant governor of Louisi-
ana. The Item banks on the dissen-
sions in the republican camp.
United stand; divided fall.

Cleveland will not be a candidate
for the presidency unless it becomes
necessary to accept for the salvation
of the party. The wood is full of
Joshuas who are ready to lead the
wandering democratic hosts into the
promised land if their Moses is not
able.
