THURSDAY JULY 14 1892.
Hogg marches on to the conquest
of Texas as ruthlessly as Pizarro did
to the destruction of Peru.
The man on the political fence is
not in it this time and he seldom is.
Between two fires he is in danger
from tbe missiles of both. Better
have the courage of one’s convictions.
The attempted free silver legisla-
tion in the bouse is a slap at Cleve-
land and it comes from his supposed
friends. If these democratic con-
gressmen are Grover’s friends be may
well pray to be delivered from his
enemies. Even that prayer is not
destined to be answered as the No-
vember returns will show.
The democratic fusion with the
third party Is strictly confined to the
republican states. This is according
to the programme arranged one year
ago but its success is very doubtful.
The republican members of tbe
farmer’s alliance can see how that
body is being used as a democratic
annex and they should retuin to the
bosom of their old party as a protest
against the unjust attempt of the
alliance leaders to carry that organ-
ization into the camp of tbe democ-
racy.
The Minnesota democrats unin-
structed by the failure of fusion to
satiety the Kansas crowd are ar-
ranging to fuse with the third party.
At least they call it fusion but it is
only fusion in name the democrats
surrendering everything to the third
party and consenting to their own an-
nihilation.
Every added twenty-tour hours in-
creases the prospects of an immense
corn and cotton crop in this prosperi-
ty blessed state. Even Hogg cannot
prevent the agricultural increase of
the land.
The time will come when north
and west Texas will not consent to
be under the thumb of east Texas
and when that time does come the
Hogg dynasty will be at a perpetual
end.
The hot weather does not cut down
the excessively rank crop of deaths
by violence in this and in other
states. The disregard of human life
is something awful.
Congress is making fully as good
progress with the appropriation bills
as was expected and all signs point
to a speedy winding up of the busi-
ness of the session and an early ad-
journment.
The Texas militia are In annual
encampment and the Lone Star state
is safe from all Invaders.
There is a heap of hard sense
about those Homestead workmen.and
as it is a long lane that has no turn it
is quite probable that they will come
to the turn of the road before this
thing is over.
Ie a public office is a public trust
no less is a public leader supposed to
be a man of honest convictions and
one who has the courage of hie own
convictions. Unfortunately this is
not the case with the majority of our
public men who are afraid of the
shadow of tbeir constituencies.
If this Homestead trouble shall
sound tbe knell of the Pinkerton
dynasty it will have answered a good
purpose and justified the shedding
of all tbe blood that it has cost.
The democratic free wool bill if
made a law would take 927000000 per
annum out of the pockets of the
American farmer. If that bill were
law it would destroy the United
States sheep and wool industry root
and branch. And for what? To build
up the trade of Australia and other
foreign sections.
The Pennsylvania militia are en
camped on tbe heights overlooking
Homestead tbeir cannon cover the
works and the village and there is
peace in that disturbed hamlet How
long it will last is not nominated in
the bond for it is a peace at the ex-
pense of tbe rights of 10000 workmen.
Unrestricted immigration is re-
sponsible tor tbe condition of things
at Homestead and they will never
be improved until a law properly re-
stricting immigration is passed and
enforced.
What will Colorado do with the
anti-free silver democracy now? Hard
money goes in this country.
The see saw between tbe democra-
tic platform and the democracy in
congress is a caution to snakes and
would make tbe angel of political
consistency weep did he have any
acquaintance with democracy.
Gladstone pulls through at Mid-
lothian but by only 700 majority. A
small margin is better than none.
This Indicates that the "Grand old
man’* is on tbe wane and losing his
popularity at home.
There is not a business man of this
city who returning after a visit to
any other city of the state does not
feel that San Antonio has no real
rival anywhere in tbe state. There is
not a single rival that this town has
that is in it with her when the real
merits of both are considered.
The Fort Worth Gazette reads its
title clear to a deadlocked conven-
tion. Tbat title is not worth the
paper tbat it is printed upon. Hogg
has two thirds of all the instructed
delegates. If tbe Light is mistaken
in this estimate it will be an extreme
pleasure to be convinced of it.
The real battlefield of this cam-
paign is in tbe east. Let the republi-
cans look out for their interests in
New York New Jersey West Vir-
ginia. With these states the victory
is sure.
The big democratic majority in
congress has petered out until it is
not worth a straw for purposes of
party legislation. It cannot even
pass a free coinage bill or sustain
Holman’s objections to pension legis-
lation It is an unwieldly mass with-
out any leadership and without any
policy.
This fact stands out in bold relief
on the page of the Homestead
troubles; had not the Pinkerton thugs
put in an appearance there would
have been no blood shed.
The democracy in congress did not
dare to face the people on the free
silver question and they have craw
fished. This is an immense relief to
Cleveland but not to Adlai Stephen-
son.
The democratic journals would per-
suade tbe Homestead workmen tbat
because they now must come into
competition with the non-union labor
of America it would be better for them
to come into competition with the
pauper labor of the old world. The
Homestead workmen are not devoid
of all sense. The Amalgamated Steel
and Iron workers are intelligent to
understand that with the labor
of Europe in competition with them
without any interposition of protec-
tive tarifis their wages would be re-
duced forty per cent below what the
Carnegie company offered them.
Their relief from a short crop does not
lie in the rooting up of ail tbat they
have planted not by any means.
